Shock Super League poaching raid could see maligned Tigers gun move abroad: Transfer Whispers

A shock suitor has emerged in the race to sign maligned halfback Luke Brooks who remains without a contract for the 2024 season.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a return to form in recent months, steering the Tigers to wins over the Panthers, Dragons and Cowboys in a record-breaking rout.

Now, according to The Daily Telegraph, Leeds Rhinos are reportedly plotting a bid to poach Brooks and bring him to the Super League.

As it stands the Rhinos have former Raiders duo Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer in the halves but both are off contract at the season’s end.

Leeds could reportedly opt to only re-sign one of their current halves to free up cap space for a bid to sign Brooks.

Meanwhile, Tigers coach Tim Sheens made no secrets of his desire to keep the embattled halfback at the club beyond this season.

“I’ve spoken to his agent and the club has spoken to his agent. We will be making him an offer and I hope it’s going to be enough,” Sheens said.

“Not only the offer, but also Brooksy’s attitude of playing here, that’s important as well...and it wouldn’t be for just a year.

“I’ve always had my eye on keeping Brooksy, I don’t care what external people have said. I’m keen to keep him happy and keep him here.

“I signed him as a kid to a long-term deal at the club and he was a smart kid then and he’s done well. In 2018 he was Dally M Halfback of the Year, so he’s had his big moments and he’s playing good footy at the moment.”

Brooks has reportedly informed his close friends and family his preference is remain in Australia.

The Tigers halfback is also set for a significant pay-cut from his current $1 million salary and on current form could field offers from rival NRL clubs.
