AFL star nears ‘untaggable' status; Two clumsy acts draw heavy scrutiny: 3-2-1

The Brisbane Lions have held off a determined but wayward Collingwood side, winning on Easter Thursday in front of a packed Gabba crowd, 15.8 (98) to 14.7 (91).

Collingwood stormed out of the blocks but ultimately were outclassed by a Lions side that continues to stamp its top four credentials.

The Lions will enter favourites in next week’s Q-Clash against Gold Coast, while Collingwood will face Essendon in the traditional ANZAC Day game at the MCG.

QUARTER-BY-QUARTER RECAP

There were no late changes for either side - Nakia Cockatoo (Brisbane Lions) and John Noble (Collingwood) were named as the medical substitutes.

Pies skipper Scott Pendlebury matched up on Lachie Neale at the opening bounce and took responsibility of the Brownlow medallist at stoppage.

Collingwood wasn’t rewarded for what appeared to be dropping the ball from Lions defender Marcus Adams and some great coast-to-coast play from the Lions ended in a Jarryd Lyons goal.

A costly 50 metre penalty against Callum Ah Chee for not clearing the protected area quickly enough brought Jordan De Goey 15 metres out from goal, which he finished off to respond quickly for the Pies.

Nathan Kreuger kicked the Pies’ second goal, but it was matched quickly by Neale, who in his 200th game put through a quick snap, which was then followed by a thumping set shot from outside 50 by Joe Daniher.

An eight-goal first quarter was soured somewhat by a bizarre brainfade from Darcy Gardiner, who charged into Josh Daicos’ back well after the latter had taken a mark.

Gardiner was immediately reported and the resulting 50 metre penalty handed Daicos a goal.

The Pies entered quarter-time with a lead, but it was quickly undone as the Lions kicked three goals in the opening nine minutes of the match.

That streak would get out to six goals before Reef McInnes kicked his first AFL goal to steady things for the Pies.

A goal to Tom Wilson a few minutes later brought the margin back to just 13 points.

Neale, who had been restricted to just four disposals in the opening term, had 14 in the second quarter alone as he and the Lions bounced back hard.

The Pies entered halftime with a bit of momentum, but a goal to Charlie Cameron early in the third quarter helped the Lions reestablish their ascendancy.

Later in the term, Marcus Adams kicked his first goal since joining the Lions in 2019 and was swarmed by teammates as their side went up by 25 points.

While the Lions took a healthy lead into the final change, back-to-back goals to Collingwood brought the margin back within two goals.

Mason Cox recieved a free kick in the forward 50 but was unable to convert and the Lions slingshotted from there with Joe Daniher finishing at the other end.

It proved the final nail in the coffin for the Pies, who were unable to capitalise on their set shot opportunities while the Lions had no such problem at the other end.

The Pies rallied late in the match and refused to wilt, but ultimately the Lions remained composed as time ran out for the visitors.

THE 3-2-1

3) LIONS FLEX MUSCLE DESPITE PIES SCARE

Collingwood were well and truly matching it with Brisbane on Thursday night, taking a two-goal lead into the first change and strangling the Lions at the source.

While the third quarter is often labelled the premiership quarter, it was the second term that saw the Lions put their foot down.

The Lions flexed their muscle for much of that term, led by Lachie Neale’s 14-possession performance.

In a 16-minute patch alone, the Lions had six goals from just 10 inside 50s.

The efficiency, Leigh Montagna said, was courtesy of their attack through the corridor, which was devastating.

“That‘s why they’ve been so efficient going inside 50 because you’re coming through the corridor, you’re getting a great look, you’ve got open space,” he said.

“You’re not coming in from the boundary line trying to hook it in, they’re getting really good access and it’s starting from that half-back line, where they’re prepared to pull the trigger.

In a game ultimately decided by seven points, it was that second quarter that proved the deciding one.

The Lions finished that quarter +25 on the scoreboard, +12 in contested possessions along with eight forward half intercepts compared to just three in the first term.

Points from forward half intercepts in the first quarter read just one point, while in the second term it read 25.

It was another statement from the Lions at a Gabba venue they look virtually impenetrable at during the regular season.

2) NEALE SHINES IN 200TH GAME

In his 199th and 200th games, Lachie Neale may well have proven he can‘t truly be tagged out of a game.

Despite close attention from Mark O‘Connor last week, Neale’s spread and stoppage nous saw him finish with 30 disposals (21 contested) and six score involvements.

Fast forward a week to his milestone match and Neale found himself up against it in the first term, managing just four disposals.

Late in that term, however, a brain fade from Brayden Maynard when Pendlebury handed off at a forward stoppage gave Neale a look at goal.

Like the best players do, Neale made the most of the opportunity and never looked back. storming to a whopping 14 possessions in the second quarter alone to enter the main break as the best player on the field.

“I‘m really disappointed for Scott Pendlebury that that goal, effectively against Maynard, was allowed to get Lachie going,” David King said at half-time.

“Once he got rolling, he was unstoppable in that second quarter.”

Perhaps the only way to stop Neale or match is influence is to expose him in defence - on more than one occasion Pendlebury found himself in considerable space and was able to help set up forward entries due to the separation he found from Neale after stoppage.

The 200-gamer finished with 33 disposals and nine score involvements even with Pendlebury paying close attention to him.

“He’s the favourite for the Brownlow right now - he’s in ripping form,” King said post-game.

“His game has changed, it’s a different game now, he’s getting the ball forward of centre, more than half his disposals tonight were in the forward half of the ground.

“He’s kicking the ball inside 50, nine score involvements is a game high. He’s in ripping form and he can do it all, that’s the hard part.”

Leigh Montagna said Neale was approaching ‘un-taggable’ status.

1) TWO POOR ACTS TO ATTRACT MRO ATTENTION

One sour note of the night came with two apparent brainfades from Darcy Gardiner and Mason Cox.

Both big men attracted scrutiny for hitting the man in front of them after a marking contest.

Gardiner was immediately reported for his act while Cox also drew scrutiny from the Fox Footy panel.

“The Darcy Gardiner one, if you wanted to make contact, go and do a late spoil, but don‘t turn side on and jump into his back like that,” Jason Dunstall said.

“The Mason Cox one looks really bad when you look at the replay.

“Truth be told, I‘d be happy for both of those players to be rubbed out, wouldn’t bother me one bit, because that’s the sort of contact we want to avoid.

“When a guy is there attacking the ball and you’re hitting an unprotected back like that deliberately when you’ve got no chance of getting the ball, it wouldn’t bother me if they both copped a week.”
