Nets media day takeaways: Kevin Durant explains trade request; Kyrie Irving on contract negotiations

Media day is typically an easy time for an NBA team to present a united front. This is less true, however, when the team's best player has requested a trade, then asked the owner to fire the president and coach, only for all of them to return.

Lonzo Ball says he can't run, jump without pain; Billy Donovan not ready to name replacement for Bulls

CHICAGO -- When will Lonzo Ball return? What's Ball's timeline? Who will start in place of him? It was clear the biggest storyline of the Chicago Bulls media day on Monday was the status of Ball, who is set to undergo another knee surgery that will keep him sidelined for at least 4-6 weeks. It's a significant loss to a Bulls team that has been without Ball since January of last season, when he originally tore his meniscus. Back then, he was expected to come back after 4-6 weeks, but he blew past that timeline and never suited up for Chicago again last season after suffering setbacks in rehab. It was then announced last week that he was set to undergo a second surgery on the same knee on Wednesday, which means the Bulls will have to start the season without their starting point guard.

NBA Coach of the Year odds: Lean on top seeds for the best bets; Ime Udoka leads candidates as worthy favorite

Tom Thibodeau was a surprising Coach of the Year winner for a multitude of reasons in 2021. Yes, he led the Knicks out of obscurity and helped Julius Randle grow into an All-Star, but such feats pale in comparison to his greatest trick: winning Coach of the Year as a No. 4 seed. The previous 10 winners before Thibodeau had all been top-three seeds. Seven of them were No. 1 seeds, and an eighth, Nick Nurse, finished second. Monty Williams reverted that trend a year ago by winning with the NBA's best record.

How Celtics' Grant Williams used his big breakout to teach rookies about mental health

In the 2022 NBA playoffs, Grant Williams made headlines like a meme stock, but his trajectory suggests he should have staying power. Well before the Boston Celtics forward played a starring role in Game 7 against the Milwaukee Bucks, he established himself as one of the league's most reliable supporting characters. He arrived at training camp leaner and lighter on his feet, but sturdy enough to hold his ground against behemoths. Throughout the regular season, when the ball found him on the perimeter, he shot it with conviction and improved accuracy.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds: One trait should point you to this year's winner

Andre Iguodala never won Sixth Man of the Year. Really think about what that means. Andre Iguodala, a future Hall of Famer, a literal Finals MVP, the defining reserve of a generation, never won Sixth Man of the Year. He lost out to such luminaries as Eric Gordon, Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams... three different times. They're all fine players. None of them are going to the Hall of Fame. They do share one trait that Iguodala lacks, though. They're all buckets.

NBA Rookie of the Year odds: Why Paolo Banchero is by far the best bet among draft class despite low odds

If you're going to make a preseason bet on the NBA's Rookie of the Year award, it should be on Paolo Banchero. I typically strive for a bit more nuance in these award previews, but if Banchero stays healthy, he is the overwhelming favorite to win the award based on precedent. He's available at +225 right now at Caesars Sportsbook. He would still be a good value bet at even money.

Jeanie Buss calls Russell Westbrook Lakers' 'best player last year,' backs off claim: He was most 'consistent'

Russell Westbrook's debut season with the Los Angeles Lakers was a complete and utter disaster. The former MVP joined a team only one season removed from winning a championship and played a significant role in their fall out of the play-in race. The team has subsequently spent the majority of the 2022 offseason attempting to trade him only to (thus far) come up short because no team wants to absorb his $47 million salary. There has even been speculation that, if Westbrook were to receive a buyout upon a trade, he'd struggle to find a new team at all on the free agent market.
