Nunthorpe Stakes Group 1 Preview

Friday gives us The third and final Group 1 of the week at York is the Nunthorpe Stakes, the 1000m dash down the York straight open to everyone including the 2yo’s. One of just 2 Group 1 races in Europe run under these conditions. 15 entered for the race this year as we look to crown a new champion with the recent retirement of the 2 time defending champion Baattash, of the 15 there is just one 2yo taking up the challenge in the 2021 version of the Nunthorpe.

Key Stats and trends since the year 2000

•One 2yo has won (2007)

•The Nunthorpe has been very kind to the older sprinters, 11 of the last 20 winners being 5yo or older, including four 7yos and a 9yo.

•4 horses have won the race twice since 2000. Borderlescott,Sole Power, Mecca’s Angel and Battaash.

•only 6 Fillies/Mares have won during that time

•2 horses have won the Nunthorpe and also Sired the winner, Kyllachy (2002 winner, sire of Sole Power 2010 and 2014 winner) and Oasis Dream (2003 winner, sire of Jwala 2013 winner)
