Allen Ablett really threw down the gauntlet to his rivals when delivering his powerful 25.30s $20,825 Farmlands Waikato Classic 457m heat win. It certainly was a stylish track debut effort. Earlier it was Quistis Bale who impressed when he delivered his sharp 25.38s Waikato Cup heat win, also over 457m.

The Manukau Sunday afternoon 318m sprint specialist Just One Smile scampered through her Denis Cole Memorial Sprint heat in a slick 21s for trainer Ben Craik during the Waikato hosted Christmas Eve meeting. Earlier it was the Dave and Jean Fahey trained Opawa Purdie who set the time standard from the four Ollie & Hazel Lawrence Maiden 457m heats when he clocked 25.76s.

It will be hard out 457m chasing action during the second Christmas Eve Waikato meeting where a pair of 457m heats will decide the finalists for both the $20,826 Farmlands Waikato Classic, plus the $10,245 Waikato Cup which will be decided on January 5.

The Sunline Trophy has developed into a very popular series which provides pathways for younger, lower graded 527m greyhounds to rise up into the higher graded chasing ranks. The highly competitive recent Sunline Trophy final, which was stylishly won by Stay Away Haydo, clearly illustrated how competitive this series has become.

It was the Roberts father and son Group race show at the Hatrick Raceway on Friday evening. Firstly son Matt was the trainer of the the Group 2 $15,825 Dash For Cash winner Hypocritical, while 30 minutes later Craig was savouring Group 1 glory after he mentored the exciting young greyhound Allen Ablett to victory in the $45,420 Spion Rose Cup at Group 1 level.

A year ago northern trainer Karen Walsh mentored My Girl Chloe to her Dash For Cash victory. She is returning to Wanganui this Friday evening with her 17.45s 305m winner One Cold Foot to try to replicate that Group 2 success.
