A start in the Gr. 1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes is being considered for last Saturday’s Taranaki Cup winner Our King Sway.

The Glenn Old-trained grey stepped up to a middle-distance to claim the Group Three feature by a long neck from Overtheriver, taking his record to four wins from 26 starts and his stake-earnings past $100,000.

Old appreciates the massive rise in class to the March 11 Ellerslie weight-for-age feature after Our King Sway carried the 53-kilogram minimum at New Plymouth and a start is by no means certain.

But if it looked like the right thing to do he would be prepared to give the Shinko King gelding his chance.

“Our original plan was to freshen him and target the Japan/New Zealand Trophy at Tauranga next month, but we’ve had a rethink and maybe strike while the iron’s hot,” Old said. “If we were to strike a wet track and that put some of the others off, it could be the way to go.

“He’s a fun horse and we figure we’ve got nothing to lose. If we decide not to go there we could still go back to our original plan, then after Tauranga the Easter at Ellerslie would also be a race to look at.”
