Trainer Kirsty Lawrence's pre-race nerves about the prospects of her maiden galloper Do Ya handling the heavy conditions at Trentham on Saturday came to nothing as the nuggety mare put her first win on the board in fine style.

Carrying the colours of Lawrence's outstanding winter galloper Intransigent, Do Ya overcame a chequered path in the home straight to charge home and claim victory after a dour struggle with runner-up Take The Trick in the final stages.

The victory ended a long run of outs for Lawrence who had last tasted success with Intransigent when he claimed his third Kiwifruit Cup at Tauranga back in June 2015.

"We thought she was pretty honest although it's been a long time between drinks as my last winner was Intransigent in the Kiwifruit Cup," she admitted.

"We've worked long and hard on this horse and I have Kane Smith to thank as he said to put her away and wait for her a year ago and we have."

Lawrence was also pleased with the display of apprentice Holly Andrews who handled the mare in line with her pre-race instructions.

"I said to Holly to just keep kicking and kicking as she will keep giving," she said.

Lawrence also relayed that stable favourite Intransigent was enjoying a lively retirement back at her Waipukurau property in partnership with former Victoria Derby and Auckland Cup winner Sangster.

"He's in the paddock at home with Sangster as his paddock mate," she chuckled.

"They're two old buggers at home creating havoc but I went to give him a pat yesterday and couldn't get near him so he's Intransigent by name and by nature."

Intransigent finished an accomplished career with 11 wins and just under $330,000 in stakes earnings to his name. Aside from his three Kiwifruit Cup wins he was also successful in the Gr. 3 Hawkes Bay Gold Cup and twice at Listed level in the Taumarunui Cup and Rotorua Plate respectively.
