New Zealand-bred stayer Tavago will take his first step toward an autumn distance feature when he takes on Winx in Saturday's Gr.1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick.

Tavago - Darryl Sherer

The winner of the Gr.1 Australian Derby last term, the son of Tavistock failed to come up in two outings as an early season four-year-old and was put aside.

"He got a virus in the spring, but he's good now," said Trent Busuttin, who prepares Tavago at Cranbourne with Natalie Young. "He's more mature and heavier now and finally able to hold his condition."

Tavago is being prepared for the $A2 million Gr.1 Sydney Cup at Randwick on April 8.
