Popular New South Wales jockey Darren Jones has died from injuries suffered in a three-horse fall at Warialda in the state's north.

The 48-year-old Tamworth rider fell in the third race yesterday in which he was riding the favourite Montague Clan.

Leanne Henry and apprentice Melanie Bolwell also fell and were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Racing NSW steward Shane Cullen said Henry was suffering general soreness while Bolwell was momentarily unconscious.

"This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to Darren's family and friends," Peter V'landys, Racing NSW chief executive said.

Jones's most recent winner was on Maybegrey at Narromine last Sunday.
