Realing can confirm a Queensland Derby campaign when he races in the Gr. 3 Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm tomorrow.

After much thought, trainer Matt Dunn decided to aim for the Gr. 1 Derby (2400m) on June 10 rather than the Gr. 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on the same day.

"In the end I have elected to go with the Derby. He has always struck me as a horse who would get over a middle-distance," Dunn said.

"But if he doesn't race well on Saturday, we can always change our minds and think about the Guineas."

Dunn was happy with Realing's first-up run when seventh at Doomben two weeks ago.

"He only had one trial leading into the race, because of wash-outs with the wet weather. He just got a bit tired towards the end, but was only about three lengths from the winner," Dunn said.

"Realing was around some good horses at the finish, so it was a handy run. I think he is probably still one trial behind in his fitness, but he will be better on Saturday."

Realing has won two of his five starts and been minor placed in another two. He has picked up A$105,000 prize-money, which is usually enough to get a horse into the Queensland Derby field.

"But a bit more would not do his chances any harm," Dunn said. From here he will go on the traditional path of the Rough Habit Plate and the Grand Prix into the Derby."
