Magic Millions Classic casualty Jonker will be spelled for two months, ending hopes of him playing a part in the major two-year-old races over the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Jonker’s owner Doug Crich reported on Sunday that Jonker had suffered numerous superficial injuries in Saturday’s Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast won by the filly Sunlight.

Jonker was the chief sufferer in the severe interference that disrupted the field in the first 300 metres when Ef Troop Horseform carved across from a wide gate in search of the lead.

Jonker was set to hold a box seat position behind the leaders when he was badly squeezed for room and cannoned into the running rail, losing several lengths.

Crich said it was only the expert horsemanship of Jonker’s rider Hugh Bowman that enabled the youngster to stay on his feet.

Crich said Jonker had lost skin off his legs and a knee and will be turned out for two months to recover from the experience.

Ef Troop’s jockey Matt McGillivray was suspended for one month for causing the interference to Jonker and other horses in the MM Classic.

Jonker finished last while Ef Troop went on to finish fourth after racing to a big lead before the turn, his first loss in four starts.

Ef Troop’s trainer Tony Gollan said his colt will have a short break with a Sydney campaign for the Golden Slipper still a possibility.

“We’ve got to work out what we are going to do with him in the next two weeks,” Gollan said. “It has always been in my mind that he’d be a Slipper horse and he’s still not out of it.”

Meanwhile Sunlight will be freshened on a property near Sydney before South Australian trainer Tony McEvoy starts her preparation for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill on March 24.

“We’ve got 10 weeks to the Golden Slipper. I think I’ll leave her in Sydney, I won’t take her back home because it’s a lot of travel for a young horse,” McEvoy said.
