Well-travelled Tavistock mare salutes at Randwick

Six-year-old Tavistock mare Our Modena (NZ) broke through for the first time from the quarters of Scone trainer Scott Singleton when landing the Furphy Handicap (1400m) at Randwick.

Sporting the colours of Tony Rider’s Milan Park, Our Modena has now won five races throughout her career which began with Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman for whom she was twice a winner.

She then transferred to Patrick Payne in Victoria for whom Our Modena also won two races before venturing north to Scone.

Placed at her two previous outings, both at Rosehill, Our Modena was given a gun run under apprentice Reece Jones and after racing one off the fence just behind the leaders was presented at the top of the straight and proved too good.

Jones was the third apprentice to ride a winner on the Randwick card, with Jenny Duggan (Our Ballagio Miss (Casino Prince)) and Zac Lloyd (Superium (Verrazano)) also in the winner’s circle, while he got the better of fellow apprentice Dylan Gibbons on runner-up Festival Dancer (Choisir).

“It was good to get one over Dylan, which was great,” Jones said.

“She has been racing so well at the moment. Scott has done an amazing job with her. She has been a model of consistency through the preparation and it was good to get a win on her.”

Our Modena was purchased as a yearling for $420,000 by bloodstock agent Bruce Perry from the 2018 Cambridge Stud draft at Karaka.

Out of the Group One placed Zabeel mare Zenella (NZ), Our Modena’s third dam is the outstanding mare Tristalove (NZ) (Sir Tristram), who is in turn out of Diamond Lover (Sticks and Stones), a prolific daughter of the great broodmare Eight Carat (Pieces of Eight).
