The trotter Sarah Palin broke a losing streak of 72 races when she was successful at Waikouaiti on Sunday.

The faith trainer Margot Nyhan, Aaron Skerrett and Rob Colligan had in Sarah Palin was rewarded when the 8-year-old mare prevailed by a head in the hands of her regular driver Peter Davis. The trio continued with the lease of Sarah Palin after the Griffins syndicate relinquished it 12 months ago.

“Aaron was in the Griffins syndicate and wanted to carry on,’’ said Nyhan.

Sarah Palin had won six races for the syndicate and Nyhan but at that stage had been winless in 44 starts.

She was to have another 28 starts before her Waikouaiti win, her first for two years.

She had finished second, third or fourth in 37 of the 72 starts in between times. She has now won seven in 152 starts and $97,756 in stakes. Six of her wins have been on grass.

“She will  probably be retired at the end of March,’’ said Nyhan.

She will then be returned to her Ashburton breeders Keith and Bevan Grice. Sarah Palin, a daughter of Pegasus Spur – Juliana, is a sister to Monty Python (10 wins) and half sister to Father Christmas (nine) and Dark Horse, an up and comer with five wins on the board.

The Grice brothers also have the Waikouaiti Cup winner Boomer Bailey leased to owner-trainer Graeme Telfer and his wife, Caryl.

The trotter Ygritte, who had her other win two years ago was successful for Dunedin owner Gerald Cayford and Waikouaiti trainer Amber Hoffman on Sunday at her 50th start.

“The only thing I did today was to take the tongue tie off. She has been working well for some weeks,’’ said Hoffman.

Ygritte had won a race at Motukarara for breeder Trevor Casey when trained by Colin and Julie De Filippi. The sister to dual Harness Jewels winner King Denny and half sister to Sarah Lindenny was subsequently leased to Cayford.
