If you’re buying a horse at next week’s yearling sales, and you don’t like its name, then there’s good news coming your way.

Harness Racing New Zealand have, this morning, approved a decision to waive the fee of changing a horse’s name after the yearling sales.

On average they see around 20 name changes following each sales at a current cost of $105.

Provided the transfer papers and any associated name change are filed with Harness Racing New Zealand by the 30th of April, the name change fee would be waived.

Harness Racing New Zealand chairman, Ken Spicer said that while it was only a small change, he felt by adding the incentive it would have other positive results.

“It will mean we should see papers being filed in a more timely manner” Spicer said.

“And with rising costs to owners in the current climate, this is just one other cost we didn’t feel was necessary if it could be avoided.”

It is hoped that this initiative will result in a change in the ongoing issue of late registration of transfer changes as well while also providing assistance to PGG Wrightson with their paperwork.
