Dunedin (New Zealand) owner Steve Thompson and Victoria trainer Dean Braun continued a successful association when Shartin won the group two $A75,000 Queensland Oaks at Albion Park on Saturday.
Shartin has also won the Tasmanian Oaks and a total of six races from nine starts. She recorded a 1.55.2 mile rate for the 2130m (mobile) at Albion Park. The daughter of Tintin In America – Bagdarin was bred by Grant Crabbe, of Broadfield. Crabbe qualified Shartin at Ashburton in November before she was sold to Braun.
“Dean offered me a share, at the same time saying I might not like the sire,” said Thompson, who is on holiday at Noosa.
Thompson shares the ownership of Shartin with Braun’s wife, Pauline McColgan, Ram Reddy and D Richards.
Thompson raced Chancellor Cullen and Tandias Bromac from the Braun stable after both horses had won races for West Melton trainer Ken Barron.
Chancellor Cullen, who won a heat of the Young Guns series at two and a Sires’ Stakes heat at Addington at three, won the 2012 Four-Year-old Classic at Gloucester Park and the Kilmore Cup. He carried on to win races in the United States. Tandias Bromac won two races in NZ and 12 races in Australia. She rated 1.53.7 for 1720m (mobile) at Melton. She was subsequently sold to the Winton breeding entity, Taffy Ltd.
Shartin is the second foal of Bagdarin (Live Or Die – Slatina), who won first up as a 3yr-old at Ashburton in 1.57.7 for a mile when trained by Crabbe and raced with breeder Bruce Francis. She was restricted to two further starts.
“I got her (Bagdarin) when she had been sacked out of another stable. The breed can be quite spirited and need a bit of one-on-one,” said Crabbe.
“We took her to Southland for 3yr-old filly races after her win but she only went fair. We found she had an arthritic complaint in one knee and was retired.”
“My daughter (Kylie) and Gavin Ryder did most of the work with Shartin and I left it to Kylie to make the decision on a sale. She put the filly on the market as she was buying a house.”
The first foal of Bagdarin had a deformity. Crabbe, a former stallion handler at Nevele R, has a weanling colt by Tintin In America out of Bagdarin. He only breeds from a mare ever second year
Braun won the 2013 Queensland Oaks with Itz Nosurprisesthere. She was by McArdle, the sire of Tintin In America. McArdle also sired the 2013 Queensland Oaks winner Nike Franco. NZ-bred horses have won the past six Queensland Oaks.
Tintin In America, a dual Harness Jewels and Messenger winner and Breeders Crown victor, was exported to Australia in February and he is now at the Yirribee Pacing Stud in New South Wales after standing at Nevele R, Prebbleton. He is the sire of Divine State, the 2yr-old who won first up in 1.52.8 at Menangle in January and 1.51.6 at his next start in the Sapling Stakes there.
