James Dean coolly grabbed his third straight win in the feature pace at Addington on Friday night, giving Mid-Canterbury trainer-driver Leo O’Reilly a winning double after converted pacer Jerry Garcia finally broke through as a trotter earlier in the night.

James Dean settled third from the 10 metres and took over with 1400m to run, outstaying Lovetodream in 3:16.4 for the 2600m (stand) event, cutting out the last 800m in 55.6sec and the 400m in 27.5.

James Dean had previously won at Timaru and Rangiora, and this was his first success at Addington, giving the Santanna Blue Chip four-year-old an overall record of five wins and four placings from 10 starts.

Second favourite Lovetodream had a nice run over the last lap for driver John Dunn and finished strongly to run James Dean to a neck, while Bite The Bullet came home well for third.

Star triallist The Dorchester ($1.50) and Blair Orange denied rookie driver Ben Hope his first race-day win behind Benhope Rulz when they held on by a short head in a maiden.
