No surprise Brad Williamson's first winner as a trainer, Jeddy R Ya Ready at Forbury Park on Friday night, was a trotter.

His father Phil has had 534 such successes, his brother Nathan 105, and in his first season, Brad has four in work and they are all trotters.

He's keen to say though that he doesn't want that to put off potential clients prepared to offer him pacers to train.

Despite driving winners since 2012, 84 pacers and 130 trotters, Brad pointed out it isn't his first love.

“I've always wanted to go training, something I've been passionate about for a while,” he said.

With this in mind, he has purchased 22 acres next to his father's property at Totara about 10 minutes south of Oamaru.

Late in October he had his first horse in Heez Belmont at the races. Jeddy R Ya Ready and Lundqvist have followed and were in the same race on Friday.

Lundqvist has had four starts for one second and three gallops.

“He's got ability, and I'm working on his gait and confidence,” said Brad, confirming he's following methods tested and proven in the Williamson environment.

“I still use dad's track and help him first. I'll keep that up and keep driving on raceday as much as possible until I get a big enough team. My aim is about a dozen horses.”
