Heaven Rocks made a triumphant Australian debut on Saturday night, taking out the A$100,000 Group 1 Ballarat Cup in the hands of co-trainer Natalie Rasmussen.

The giant, enigmatic pacer was excellent in his first start in the draw of a race, leading for fun from the ace barrier and never being headed.

He received a relatively easy time of it through the middle stages, but also took off on Rasmussen twice at the same point of the track, before burning home in 55.5 to defy Lennytheshark, who had trailed.

“Heaven Rocks got away a bit during the race a couple of times,” said Rasmussen on the stable’s website.

“He can do that but I am pretty sure it was caused by a reflection from a car parked on the infield because it happened at almost exactly the same spot twice.

“But he stuck to it well and he was real good this morning (Sunday).”

The stable was left with one runner in the race after Vincent was scratched on Thursday with some heat in a leg.

“We won't know more about Vincent for a few days.

“The swelling is going down and when that is right we can do some more testing.”

The stable also had to scratch Titan Banner from his first Australian assignment at Menangle after coming up lame on race morning.

“Titan Banner was perfect but went out for a jog on Saturday morning and pulled up a little tender.

“We think it is in the foot and hopefully not too serious.

“We will be getting him checked out too.”

Stable three-year-olds Spankem and The Devils Own qualified for the A$200,000 Victoria Derby Final at Melton on Saturday night with a win and a third in their A$20,000 heats, respectively.

“The three-year-olds were especially good because we knew going into the race where they were at and how much they would improve,” said Rasmussen.

“The Devils Own came home well in a fast quarter and Spankem was just too strong for them.

“It’s going to be an interesting Derby though and it certainly won't be easy.”
