Alister Black said he'll be stepping into the unknown when he takes unraced juvenile trotter Get Lucky to Addington for Saturday week's $30,000 New Zealand Trotting Stakes, but it's something he's done successfully before.

Black produced Successful Way to win a two-year-old trot at Addington on debut in March of 2013.

That was a feat in itself but it was only a maiden race, compared to next week’s Group 3.

While Black knows Get Lucky has the ability, how he will handle the big stage is another matter.

By Lucky Chucky out of Bree, from the family of Stig and Take A Moment, Get Lucky was purchased by Ian and Lindsay Thomson for $20,000 at last year's premier sale in Christchurch.

“Lindsay was keen on the Lucky Chuckys and was underbidder on the half -sister to Temporale that Tony Herlihy bought,” Black explained.

Named Fortunato and bought for $35,000, that filly contested a three-horse trial at Alexandra Park in February for Herlihy and ran her mile in 2:14.7.

Get Lucky was on his own at Winton last week when he clocked 2:05.1 to qualify in the hands of Nathan Williamson.

Get Lucky had earlier taken part in a couple of workouts but only in three-horse affairs so the field at Addington will seem like a crowd.

Black said the gelding is sensible as a rule and to help combat stage fright has had numerous trips to the Williamson establishment to run with bigger groups.

A second Lucky Chucky juvenile in work with Black is Lucky Me, a close relation of Successful Way.

“She's not likely to qualify at two but I'd expect her to do something at three,” he said.
