North Canterbury trainer Don Burrows has appealed the penalty in his case related to two positive swabs from trotter Lightworkofit.

Burrows was fined $9,000 by the Judicial Control Authority after pleading guilty to two charges of presenting his horse to race not free of the prohibited substance Kavain.

The Racing Integrity Unit confirmed on Friday that Burrows has appealed the penalty and it will be heard at Addington Raceway next Friday, May 25.

The RIU also confirmed that Kavain has been a banned substance in the New Zealand racing industry for a number of years.

FEI, the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, banned Kavain from its event in February of this year.

Lightworkofit won both races in question, at Addington on February 2 and 23, and has subsequently been disqualified.

The promoted winners were Justamollyarcher and Mystical Star.

Burrows was first licenced in 1978 and had not previously been charged with any breach of a prohibited substance rule.

Tests on numerous products found at Burrows’ stables tested negative for Kavain.

In determining the penalty, the JCA adopted a starting point of $12,000 and applied a 25 percent discount for Burrows’ clean record over a 40-year-period, his guilty plea and full co-operation.
