Gore horseman Ross Wilson’s 100th win as a trainer could not have come in more appropriate circumstances.

 

Wilson hit triple figures when Bridesdale Robyn bolted in on her home track on Saturday.

Win number 100 came thirty 38 years after Mister Majestic gave the trainer his first victory at Roxburgh in 1980.

Despite there being four decades of difference between Mister Majestic and Bridesdale Robyn, they have a common connection.

Bridesdale Robyn was bred by Balfour breeder, Judy Dillon, who races the four-year-old with her trainer.

Mister Majestic was bred by Dillon’s father, the late Eric Butler.

“It is quite ironic that that mare is my 100th winner because I bought my first winner, Mister Majestic, off Judy’s father, Eric Butler,’’ said Wilson.

Wilson has scored the majority of his training wins from the renowned Robyn breed that descends from the foundation broodmare Ryal Robyn.

Ryal Robyn is the dam of Wilson’s dual Gr.1 winner, Robyn’s Treasure, who is the dam of Bridesdale Robyn.

Robyn’s Treasure provided Wilson with his biggest training wins when scoring the 3YO Fillies Series and New Zealand Oaks double at Addington in 1994.

Wilson admits those victories are career highlights, but said winning smaller races was just as satisfying.

“The horses that you don’t think are going to win can give you the biggest thrills.”

Wilson passed Robyn’s Treasure on to Dillon for the later stage of her breeding career and the mare produced Bridesdale Robyn.

She would be her last foal as Robyn’s Treasure died shortly after foaling the Christian Cullen filly.

Dillon hand-reared Bridesdale Robyn at her Balfour farm, after the mare’s death.

Bridesdale Robyn made Wilson’s 100th training win a stylish one when bolting in by four-and-a-half lengths.

The victory suggested the mare has returned a stronger horse as a four-year-old.

But, Wilson thinks her improved manners are the key to her progress.

“She has come back stronger, but I think the big thing is she is not doing everything wrong like she was last season.”

“She is a pretty nice mare and I think she will win a few more races.”

Nathan Williamson starred in the sulky at the Gore meeting with four wins.

He trained and drove Delightful Deal, who upset the favourite The Empress in Saturday’s feature race, the Ladyship Stakes final.

Williamson also scored wins with Wayward Roc, Stay Aboard and Please Shuddup.
