As Murray Baker aims to take home a fourth Australian Derby on Saturday, son Bjorn will be vying for his first slice of the mile and a half classic.
Murray Baker, who now trains in partnership with Andrew Forsman, has crossed the Tasman and plundered three of the last nine Australian Derbies with Nom Du Jeu (2008), It's A Dundeel (2013), and Mongolian Khan (2015) from only five runners, which also included 2009 runner-up Harris Tweed.
In the 2017 edition of the race, Baker and Forsman are represented by Tulloch Stakes winner Jon Snow while Bjorn Baker has the lightly-raced Impavido engaged.
The father and son combined to win the Victorian Derby with Lion Tamer in 2010 when in partnership in New Zealand but will be in opposing camps for the first time at Group I level on Saturday.
"If he wins I will be able to charge him a bit more rent," Bjorn Baker said, in reference to Jon Snow being stabled at his Warwick Farm base.
"We were in partnership for three years and we had a Derby winner together in that time so there's an established formula there but it's not too complicated.
"Impavido is only in his first prep and Jon Snow has already been over a Derby trip so there are some differences in how each horse is being prepared.
"Impavido probably comes out of the form race (Rosehill Guineas) going into Saturday but he's going to have to pick up a few lengths realistically."
Baker believes the booking of world class jockey Joao Moreira and the prospect of an improved track from the heavy (10) rating in the Rosehill Guineas, gives Impavido a chance to bridge the gap on some of his bigger rivals.
"I think if we get a better track that will help him. We're just mindful of him being in his first preparation as much as anything," Baker said.
"He's still learning what it's all about so hopefully Moreira can help switch him on."
Impavido has the ideal pedigree for Derby success, being by High Chaparral out of a Zabeel mare, but only two horses since 1990 has won the Australian Derby inside seven starts - Ethiopia (2012) and Fiumicino (2007).
