Queen Bellissimo lands Midway

Consistent mare Queen Bellissimo (NZ) (Swiss Ace) proved too game for her rivals when land the Midway (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday in the hands of Alysha Collett.

Now the winner of five of her eight starts, the four-year-old mare has only missed a place once in her career.

After winning comprehensively when resuming in a BenchMark 78 Fillies and Mares race at Kembla Grange last month then boxing on gamely for a narrow second last time at Rosehill, the four-year-old continued her good association with Collett, who has partnered her to four wins.

“She is really starting to mature now,” Widdup said.

“She has never really let us down. Her last run last time in she was caught a bit deep and it was probably one run too many but this time in she has been excellent and it is great to get a win for Gerry (Harvey, owner and breeder).

Queen Bellissimo relished the strong tempo in the race before closing over the top and Collett was delighted to see the mare continue to progress.

“She is very versatile and it was great when they set a nice tempo in front to come back, find a comfortable rhythm and she put them away quite comfortably,” Collett said.

“It is like having a little child and watching them grow up, it feels like that.”

By Westbury Stud stallion Swiss Ace, Queen Bellissimo is out of the four-win Royal Academy mare Princess Zanzibar.
