Trainer Shaune Ritchie seems to have found a handy sort in Swiss Ace filly Bella Gioia, an impressive winner of the $20,000 Safewise (2YO) over 1200m here Te Rapa on Saturday.

Bella Gioia was having her second start after an encouraging debut for fifth on Boxing Day at Ellerslie, after two trail wins. Ritchie freshened her up, and she recorded another trial win at Avondale mid-June.

Opening up at $9.50 before closing at $4.80, Bella Gioia didn't let her supporters down with a convincing win.

Ridden by up-and-coming apprentice Sam Weatherley, the daughter of Westbury Stud's Swiss Ace out of Joiya, raced three wide without cover - Weatherley riding to Ritchie's instructions, then darted away down the middle of track to score easily with Weatherley giving his signature fist-pump crossing the finish line. Debutant Imulsive Habit (T.Thornton) stuck on well for second place another 1 ¾ lengths away, one length clear of Cortado (D.Prastiyou). The winning time was 1min 13.62 for the 1200m.

Purchased at the 2015 Karaka Select Sale for $60,000, Bella Gioia is a half-sister to Niki Piki Milo, winner of the Listed Ryder Stakes.

The winner is raced by Dominic Li, and commentator George Simon and his wife Maryanne.

None of the owners weren't present for the victory, all in Hong Kong at the moment.

Ritchie has plans to take on her own age group next season.

"She's quite an exciting prospect for the three-year-old fillies' races." She will most likely head for a spell to freshen up," Ritchie said.

"My wife Alison and I came here on Friday to walk the track, and we felt the middle of the track was the best place to be, so I asked Sam that's where we wanted to be, and it worked out," Ritchie said.

Runner-up, the strapping gelding Impulsive Habit, is likely to head next to the Listed Ryder Stakes at the end of the month.
