Valley Girl, the winner of Waikato Racing Club's Group I Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) in February, steps out in the Group I Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick tomorrow, on the second day of The Championships.

The Mastercraftsman filly caused a minor upset in the Group I feature, winning by three-quarters of a length, outgunning proven group performers including Stolen Dance and Kawi. The superb performance was a huge boast to her breeding owners after she was a late nomination after the Waikato Racing Club rang her trainers and asked if they had any horses that could run in New Zealand's richest weight-for-age feature. She went on to become the first filly to win the race, since Bound To Honour in 1982.

The Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs trained filly then put in a great effort running a brilliant fifth in the Group I New Zealand Derby (2400m). Drawn wide she was running on in the end and finished ahead of subsequent Australian Derby (2400m) winner Tavago.

Owned by her breeders the Hawkins family at Wentwood Grange & Llanhennock Trust, the filly finished runner-up in the Group I Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill a fortnight ago, beaten only three-quarters of a length to Single Gaze.

"It was a super run and she's come through it really well. She's really taken that next step up," Logan said. Logan is trying to win Australia's premier three-year-old filly event again, after she won with Rising Romance in 2014.

Hong Kong based Brett Prebble, who was aboard Valley Girl in the Vinery Stud Stakes retains the ride.

The Australian Oaks also features kiwi's Sofia Rosa, from Stephen Marsh stable and Capella trained by Danica Guy.
