Munster opens up on gambling, alcohol addictions after rehab stint

Storm superstar Cameron Munster has admitted to losing $50,000 in one day due to his gambling addiction.

Munster recently returned to pre-season training looking healthier than ever after a stint in a Brisbane rehabilitation clinic to work on his issues with gambling and binge drinking.

The 26-year-old has opened on his struggles and the impact they’ve had on his footy, as well as the goals he’s set for himself.

Munster attended the Banyans Health and Wellness centre for four weeks. He entered under a fake name and his mobile phone was confiscated upon entry. Programs can cost up to $3,000 a day, which the Melbourne five-eighth paid for himself, according to the Telegraph.

The Queensland State of Origin star entered the clinic after the white powder scandal in which he was hit with a one-game suspension and $30,000 fine from the NRL for. The Storm then handed down a suspended $100,000 fine, dropped him from the leadership group and imposed a 12-month alcohol ban.

Munster told the Telegraph that Storm coach Craig Bellamy called him “silly” after the video of him, Brandon Smith and Chris Lewis emerged. He also revealed the club came close to sacking him.

“It was really bad, just hours before the Dally M Awards,” he said.

“I don’t know if he was angry, probably more disappointed in me.

“He said to me ‘I want to keep you here but I’m only one person. The board members and owners and everyone else are really p**** off.’

“You know it’s another learning curve about how my compulsive and addictive behaviour led to it.

“The only reason I’m still at this club is that I’ve come back with a plan to deal with it.

“That was me going to rehab, me paying for it. The club and the board had obviously had enough.

“There’s no question they considered getting rid of me.”

Munster was not treated for drug use in the clinic, but rather drinking and gambling.

He opened up about how he lost two mates in 2018 to suicide — one due to gambling debts.

“It’s another important reason why I went and got professional help. These are horrible wounds,” he said.

“Although please don’t write it as though it’s an excuse for what I’ve done.”

In the candid interview, Munster admitted that his performances have suffered due to his gambling and revealed that during lockdown earlier this year he lost $50,000.

“The anxiety it brings,” he explained.

“At one stage I had no fingernails left. I’d be chewing them off while watching a race.

“Every Saturday I was in a gambling routine. Some days I’d win and have a really good game.

“Some days I might lose a lot of money and it was like a rollercoaster.

“I’d have this anxiety about a big loss hanging over my head and it showed in the way I played. The days when you do your arse are shocking.”
