Bulked up Suaalii impresses Roosters — Off-season Central

It seems Roosters teen sensation Joseph Suaalii has kept himself busy over the off-season with skipper James Tedesco revealing the 18-year-old is “looking huge.”

Suaalii was a household name before he even made his debut. There was so much hype around him and he was rated that highly that the NRL decided to grant him an exemption to play first grade before turning 18.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson had originally hoped to hold Suaalii back a little longer but injuries in the backline forced him to call on the young gun.

Suaalii debuted in Round 11 and played four more games before suffering a season-ending foot injury, which he suffered at training.

Those five games as well as his footy in the lower grades was enough for him to be selected to be a part of the Future Blues’ training camp last weekend.

Suaalii is back to full fitness after undergoing surgery on his foot and according to Tedesco looking bigger than ever.

“We all know Suaalii’s a freak but he had that injury which was a big surgery for him and he’s on his recovery now,” Tedesco

“He’s looking huge as well, he’s only 18 years old and he’s looking about 105-110 kilos.

“He’s only going to get better, so we’ve just got to keep him healthy.”

Suaalii is in contention to fill one of the two spots in the Roosters’ backline left vacant after the Morris twins retired. Paul Momirovski, Billy Smith, Kevin Naiqama and Adam Keighran are also in the conversation.

He’s not the only young Roosters that’s also beefed off in the off-season.  South Sydney star Cameron Murray is racing the clock to be fit for Round 1 after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery.

The 23-year-old was spotted in a sling while on holidays with teammates and has since revealed to he underwent a shoulder reconstruction a week after the grand final.

Ironically, it was the same procedure as Nathan Cleary’s and the two got it done during the same week at the same hospital.

While Cleary’s injury was suffered during State of Origin, there was no exact moment Murray injured his. It has simply degraded over time.

Recovery time can be up to six months, which could mean Murray may not return until April, however he is determined to be fit for the Rabbitohs’ Round 1 clash with the Broncos.

“I’ve had a sore right shoulder for a couple of years,” he said.

“I’ve got through everything by keeping it strong, and the rehab staff here looking after me — they are the ones who have kept me on the field and playing.

“I got a scan towards the end of last season and they said I needed to get it done.

“It was a full shoulder reconstruction. They call it a latarjet procedure, which is a four to six-month recovery. I got it done on October 11.

“Cleary had the same surgery. I saw him last week at the Blues awards and we worked out we got it at the same time, but we had different surgeons.

“There was no one incident with mine. I’m confident of being back for Round 1, but I also won’t rush it.”

When Murray does return to the field he could have some extra responsibilities too with the local junior said to be the favourite to take over the captaincy.

New coach Jason Demetriou is expected to announce the club’s new captain next week.
