Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has hit back at complaints from NRL players over the competition’s reintroduced Covid-19 restrictions for players.

Almost every NRL team has been hit heavily by the latest outbreak of Covid-19 across the country, including 16 Broncos players and 22 Titans players testing positive in recent weeks.

The competition earlier this month enforced level one protocols, barring players from entering the indoor areas of pubs and clubs as well as a number of other measures. Most controversially, it required any visitors attempting to enter the home of a player or staff member under the restrictions to provide a negative rapid antigen test first – a troublesome requirement given the present difficulties of obtaining those tests.

The tightened rules sparked widespread player unrest, with a number of top stars including Latrell Mitchell, Jack Wighton and Jordan Rapana sharing their complaints to social media.

But Robinson told SEN 1170 that he had not heard of any complaints from his Roosters players since the club resumed training last week – and said the restrictions ‘aren’t the end of the world’.

“Everyone knows it’s jumped on us over the last few weeks … this isn’t about as a 20-year-old: ‘how come we can’t go to a nightclub?’,” the Roosters mentor told SEN.

“We know we’ve got vaccinations but we’ve also got to look after the elderly and the vulnerable for a period of time.

“We know we’ve just got to go through this for however many weeks or months with some small restrictions.”

Robinson said his players had accepted the mandate from the NRL.

“I have not heard one complaint about the restrictions I’ve heard nothing, not one complaint, not one question,” he stated.

“They’ve just gone ‘okay, that’s what we’ve got to do’.

“Everyone can see what’s in front of us at the moment.

“We received [the message from the NRL], we passed it on [to the players] and we’re going about adhering to them and we’ll just keep training.

“I don’t see it as a big deal at the moment. You can go to a restaurant but just sit outside, is that the end of the world in summer?”

The Sydney mastermind also opened up on the stunning extent of the cases in his side.

“As a percentage, we would have about 75 per cent that have had it or are going through it (either Covid-19 or close-contact isolation) at the moment,” Robinson said.

“Out of 36, we had 11 training on the first day back after pre-season but also a couple of those guys have had it earlier in Christmas.

“It’s cool, it’s not different to what everyone else is going through.

“Life’s not back to normal for us – we’ve got different guys coming in and out every day – but we’ll just keep surging ahead with our training.”
