The secret Slater dinner that could save Maroons outcast after Origin hotel scandal

Origin outcast Jai Arrow reportedly held secret talks with Queensland power brokers and new coach Billy Slater in a bid to secure a return to the Maroons side.

The 26-year-old was kicked out of Origin camp after game two last year for breaching the NRL’s biosecurity protocols by sneaking a woman into the team hotel.

Arrow missed game three of the series placing his future with Queensland in doubt.

The Daily Telegraph, however, revealed Arrow held a meeting with QRL chairman Bruce Hatcher and chief executive officer Rohan Sawyer during the off season in which he showed remorse for his actions.

Arrow revealed he was then invited to dinner with rookie coach Billy Slater.

“I went to dinner with him the other week – I went with a few other players,” Arrow said to The Daily Telegraph.

“That was good that he invited me and we got to sit down and speak about what it means to be a Queenslander.

“Obviously I am very grateful. It was a time in my life that was pretty rough but something I had to put up with and not dwell on.

“I had to move on with life. All I could do was suffer the consequences, move on and then get back to my job.

“I can’t thank Billy enough for inviting me to that dinner. I suppose it takes a weight off my shoulders.”

The pair are far from strangers, having played together four years ago during Arrow’s first series and the gun backrower couldn’t speak highly enough of the legendary fullback.

“He is unbelievable,” Arrow said. “In my debut year in Origin, going in and seeing the likes of Billy and the way he conducted himself on and off the field, he was a pretty special player.

“He knows his footy, loves his footy and he is obviously passionate about Queensland. That is what you want in a coach. He pretty much coached the side anyway.

“I would be lying if I didn’t say I was thinking about it. Having a taste of Origin and being part of it – I have played nine games now – I want more. I met with the QRL."
