Window has closed: Why Hodgson injury is a concern' for Raiders and Eels

Josh Hodgson’s season-ending ACL injury will cause headaches for not one, but two clubs.

Hodgson suffered the injury in his side’s loss to the Cowboys last weekend. The initial reports were that it wasn’t season-ending but then the devastating news was confirmed on Monday that the 32-year-old won’t return this year.

It means the English international has played his last game for the Raiders given will join the Eels next season on a two-year deal.

But before Hodgson swaps the green jersey for the blue and gold, his focus is on the Raiders — who Paul Kent has basically written off for this year.

On top of Hodgson’s injury the Raiders have also lost halfback Jamal Fogarty until mid-season.

Asked if he’d put the line through the Raiders, Kent said on NRL 360: “I know it’s only early but... nearly yeah.

“They’re without their halfback and their hooker now. I wasn’t convinced with what I saw on Saturday night from them either,” he added.

“It’s got to be a really tough time for the club here on in. To lose players so crucial to what your plans were for the year — that’s the big thing.”

News Corp journalist Phil Rothfield took it one step further, declaring that the club’s premiership window has closed.

But he does believe there are brighter days coming for the club with coach Ricky Stuart set to be armed with a war chest.

“They played in the grand final in 2019 and I think sadly that window has closed,” Rothfield told NRL 360.

“They’ve lost John Bateman, George Williams, Josh Hodgson and I’m not sure Jarrod Croker is going to make it back.

“What I will say that will cheer Canberra fans up a little bit, I think with these guys going, Ricky’s going to have a decent-sized cheque book — probably the most expensive in the game.

“Now they’ve got an opportunity to get active for next year and future years and I think they need to ASAP.”

Meanwhile, Kent believes the Eels have to be a “little bit concerned” given this is Hodgson’s third ACL injury.

James Hooper agreed and also revealed that the Tigers didn’t sign the veteran No.9 because of his injury history.

“I think the Wests Tigers were having a good look at Hodgson over the course of the summer but they decided not to go down that road because they did some medical work on his knees and there were concerns there,” he said.

“So if I am the Eels I would definitely be a little bit nervous.

“But he’s a great player, if he can get himself back and he’s fit then of course he’s a valuable addition... but certainly some areas for concern.”
