‘Can't be a victim': Griffin admits Dragons star needs technique tweak after being hit with ban

Dragons enforcer Jaydn Su’A has been banned for one match and is facing a two week stint on the sidelines if he fights his charge and loses after a high tackle on Dale Finucane.

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin admitted he needs to look at correcting Su’A’s technique after he was sin-binned for a high shot for the second week in a row.

“I’d have to have another look at it, but if they are the rules, they are the rules,” Griffin said.

“To me it didn’t seem overly high initially.

“We gave away three penalties for high tackles in the first 30 minutes and invited people down into our own end. We have got to be smarter.

“I will work on that problem with Jaydn and his technique rather than try and dissect the referees.

“He has just got to be lower in his target. If you hit someone above the shoulders it is going to be a penalty.

“Again I’d have to have another look at it. The only view I got of it in the box, I thought if it is going to be a penalty fair enough.

“But they put you in the bin now so you can’t be a victim to it or complain about it. We just have to get better at it.”

Finucane found it hard to comment on the tackle post match.

“I’m not too sure, obviously I was surging and leading into the line,” Finucane said.

“To be honest I’d have to look at it again. I don’t think . . . it is hard to comment to be honest.”

Su’A was sent to the sin bin against the Sharks, the second time in two weeks after spending a stint on the sidelines against the Panthers in Round 2.

Following on from a late hit on Penrith half Sean O’Sullivan, the 25-year-old was given his marching orders for the high shot on Finucane which was deemed forceful.

As referee Gerard Sutton raised ten fingers in the air, halfback Ben Hunt threw his head back in utter disbelief.

“Poor old Jaydn can’t take a trick at the moment, but Finucane definitely fell into the tackle,” Andrew Voss said on Fox League’s coverage of Thursday night football.

“I don’t know how Su’A could react quick enough to change where his point of contact was going to be.

“He has a chair with his name on it in the sin bin poor old Jaydn Su’A.

“They deem sin binnable high-contact has to be forceful, well Jaydn Su’A is not going to make a soft tackle, ever, so any time there is head contact he is off to the bin now.”

“Is there a defence for Jaydn Su’A for Finucane not being bolt upright?” Voss asked.

“I think there is a defence, there is mitigating circumstances, you make contact with the head though and you at least get penalised, whether he deserves to be in the bin that is debatable,” Fox League’s Greg Alexander said.

While Su’A spent his time on the sidelines, the Sharks were able to score 10 points in the wet encounter at WIN Stadium.

Last week against the Panthers, Su’A’s side conceded 14 during his 10-minute stint, taking the total of points scored whilst he was off the field to 24.
