‘He is not proven': Big Ponga risk after secret Dolphins meeting revealed

Knights superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga reportedly met with Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett following his side’s loss to the Sharks.

According to The Daily Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield, the pair had lunch at a secret location in Sydney on Saturday accompanied by Redcliffe CEO Terry Reader and recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan.

The meeting is the strongest indicator yet a potential move is on the cards, but Fox League’s analysts aren’t sold on Ponga being a marquee player.

“$1.3 million for Kalyn Ponga if you watched him play yesterday out at Shark Park he was anything but a $1.3 million player,” Michael Ennis said.

“And I don’t mean that to be harsh, he is a wonderful player. I would love to see Kalyn stay at Newcastle, I really would and I think the best investment for the Dolphins moving forward, and it is just my opinion, is I think they go all in for Cameron Munster.

“And then they try and get Reece Walsh, I really do.

“I think you can’t afford to spend the amount of money on Munster and Ponga, I think they are far better off suited, you get Reece Walsh for half the price of Ponga.

“I think there is so much upside, in knowing Wayne Bennett and how he coaches, what he could do for Reece Walsh and where Reece could get to.

“We have already seen that relationship between Munster and Bennett it’s like the old days with him and Alfie (Langer), he loved coaching him in Origin.”

Braith Anasta voiced Ennis’ sentiment.

“I think that’d be a dynamic combination, I think the appeal with Kalyn is that he would be a great ambassador for the new franchise,” Anasta said.

“The problem there is they are going to have to pay massive overs for him, he is not proven, he hasn’t won a premiership, he hasn’t got close to winning a premiership, so you are rolling the dice a little bit with Kalyn.

“Because he is going to take up a huge chunk of your salary cap as well so they have got decisions to be made there.”

While marquee players such as Harry Grant, Clint Gutherson and Jahrome Hughes have all been snatched away from the Dolphins, Cooper Cronk believes the NRL’s newest club is set to make a number of signings in the coming weeks.

“I think in terms of the Dolphins storyline, I think give it a couple more weeks and I think they are going to come thick and fast the signings,” Cronk explained.

“Because rosters are going to start getting filled up and all of a sudden those players that want to stay loyal or stay with their club all of a sudden become less important.

“I think it’s the nice story at the moment, we are talking about it because they haven’t signed a big one, but give it six or eight weeks I think they are going to come thick and fast.”

While the Knights have reportedly offered Ponga more than $1.2 millions a year to remain in Newcastle, it is yet to be seen where the dazzling fullback will play next season.
