It's a problem': Former Kiwi reveals Warriors' big relocation worry

Former New Zealand Warriors coach Tony Kemp has revealed the Warriors are to face a major problem ahead of their move back to New Zealand.

Euan Aitken, Matt Lodge and Reece Walsh are players who aren’t eager to relocate across the Tasman.

Euan Aitken recently told The Daily Telegraph due to family reasons he will not be re-locating to New Zealand at the end of the season.

Lodge recently rejected an extension contract with the Warriors and wants to return to Sydney for the 2023 season.

Walsh has been linked with a move to the Dolphins next season as the 19-year-old reportedly has a ‘get out clause’ in his current deal.

Kemp believes if Walsh departs it could trigger a domino effect.

“It’s a problem, Matt Lodge has come out and said, ‘The contract isn’t good enough’, they offered him a big contract to stay but he wants to remain in Australia,” Kemp said on SENZ Breakfast.

“We’ve already seen Euan Aitken (opt to remain in Australia), and the rumour is if they (the Dolphins) don’t get Kalyn Ponga they will go after Walsh next.

“It’s not just a Reece Walsh issue, it’s all the Aussies that are in the Warriors side, they’re in Redcliffe at the moment, maybe half a dozen of them will stay back when they go to Mt Smart.”

Asked about whether Kemp was resentful to any of these players opting to stay in Australia, the former Kiwi international empathised with certain players’ motives.

“Not at all, what I do think they need to sort out are contracts,” Kemp replied.

“With contracts, if you sign one, honour it.”

The Warriors are chasing three straight wins for just the second time since 2018 when they host the Cowboys on Friday night at Moreton Daily Stadium.
