Simi Sasagi has been rewarded with a two-year extension that will keep the Knights utility in Newcastle until at least the end of the 2024 season.

Capable of playing centre, five-eighth or lock, Sasagi is highly versatile which makes him a valuable asset for the Knights to hold onto.

Sasagi, who moved to Newcastle from New Zealand in 2017 to play with the Knights SG Ball team, has played eight NRL games in his career, including five this season.

“Simi has made steady progression over the past year and is developing nicely,” Knights head of recruitment Clint Zammit said.

“His skill set and versatility to play numerous positions makes him an important part of our squad.

“If he continues to apply himself and work hard, he will play a lot more NRL in the future.”

Sasagi, who turned 21 earlier this year, has been named on the bench for this Sunday’s game with Penrith.

DOLPHINS LOCK IN ANOTHER ‘PIECE OF THE PUZZLE’

The Dolphins have continued to build their forward pack ahead of 2022 by signing veteran front rower Jarrod Wallace.

The NRL’s new franchise confirmed the news on Thursday, with Wallace joining Wayne Bennett from next season on a two-year deal.

Wallace joins Melbourne trio Felise Kaufusi and Kenny and Jesse Bromwich, Rabbitoh Mark Nicholls, Cowboy Tom Gilbert and Parramatta’s Ray Stone as key additions to the Dolphins squad.

“Jarrod is a highly-experienced front rower who has had involvement in winning State of Origin teams and has also experienced the pressure of a Grand Final,” Dolphins’ chief executive officer Terry Reader said.

“We are really excited about the forward pack we have built so far, and Jarrod is just another key piece of that puzzle.

“He was also born in Queensland and has played for both the Broncos and Titans, so will understand just how big and important our local derbies against the other Queensland teams will be next year.”

STORM WINGER RETURNS FROM UNION STINT

 

Young Tonumaipea has returned to the Melbourne Storm on a train and trial deal, following a two-year stint with in rugby union.

The 29-year-old played his juniors with the Victorian based side the Northern Thunder and has played 43 NRL games for the Storm from 2014-2018.

Following a two-year overseas religious mission Tonumaipea returned to the NRL spending the 2020 season with the Gold Coast Titans before defecting to rugby union.

The Samoan international has joined the Storm shortly after the Melbourne Rebels’ recent exit from the Super Rugby Pacific competition.

Tonumaipea is eager to return to the club where his NRL career begun, relishing his second opportunity with the Storm.

“When I left Melbourne midway through 2018, I thought that would probably be the last time I’d be wearing purple,” Tonumaipea said.

“It’s funny how the world works sometimes. It’s done a full circle.

“I’m buzzing and ready to go.”

The 29-year-old’s return to the club has excited the Storm’s General Manager of Football Frank Ponissi, who believes the Victorian developed junior will be a great addition to the club.

“Young was a very popular and respected member of the Storm squad during his previous time with the club,” Ponissi said.

“I think we all hoped, especially considering he’s a junior from the northern suburbs on Melbourne, that at some stage he would rejoin us.
