History makers! NRLW fixture to be first official match at new-look Allianz Stadium

An NRLW fixture between the Sydney Roosters and the St George Illawarra Dragons will make history as the first official sporting game to be played at the rebuilt Allianz Stadium in Sydney on September 2.

In a rematch of last season’s grand final, the Roosters and Dragons will compete as a curtain-raiser to an NRL clash between the Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The Roosters and Dragons were originally scheduled to play their Round 3 NRLW fixture at Leichhardt Oval but will instead lay claim to a historic achievement.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo noted how important of a moment it was in the realm of not just rugby league, but the Australian sporting landscape as a whole.

“This is an exciting moment for the women’s game and rugby league,” Abdo said.

“Our remarkable female athletes will create Australian sporting history in the state-of-the-art new stadium.

“I’d like to thank our broadcast partners, the Sydney Roosters and Venues NSW for helping us make this is a reality.

“History will be made on Friday, September 2. The first ever match on Allianz Stadium - an NRLW fixture - followed by the clash between the two foundation Clubs in the final round of the regular season.”

Roosters NRLW skipper Isabelle Kelly was looking forward to running out onto the turf for the very first time at the refurbished venue as the reigning premiers look to defend their crown.

“This is such an exciting moment for everyone involved at the Roosters, and the honour of being the first team to ever play at the Roosters new home at Allianz Stadium isn’t one we take lightly,” Kelly said.

“The Roosters have been invested in the women’s program for a number of years now and we really appreciate the Club’s efforts to make this happen.

“I know I speak on behalf of the entire NRLW squad when I say thank you and that we can’t wait to run out onto our new home on the night.”

Following the rugby league double header, Allianz Stadium will play host to the Wallabies taking on South Africa on September 3 while the Matildas take on Canada on September 6 in a friendly clash.
