Sheens completes coaching set-up as Furner joins Wests Tigers

Experienced assistant coach David Furner will join the Wests Tigers’ staff next season as head of football Tim Sheens finalises his set-up for 2023.

Furner will join club legends Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah as assistants to Sheens, who will be head coach in 2023 and 2024 before Marshall takes over the reins.

Furner, a former New South Wales Origin and Kangaroos forward, joins the Tigers with over 25 years of experience — both as a player and coach.

He will the join the Tigers after finishing up as an assistant at the Bulldogs. Prior to that he was an assistant and head coach at the Raiders and an assistant at the Cowboys when they won the premiership in 2015.

The Tigers confirmed the appointment via a statement on Thursday.

“I’ve known David for a very long time, and I know that he is not only a quality person but has an extremely sharp football mind,” Sheens said.

“He joins us at a key stage in the club’s development and his experience will be hugely beneficial.

“Like Benji and Robbie, David knows what success looks like, and I’m confident he will be a major asset to this club.”

After touring the Tigers’ new centre of excellence, Furner said it was “incredible” and he “can’t wait to get started.”
