Huge Peachey, Staines swap deal set to be announced as Panthers' $500k flyer departs

Panthers winger Charlie Staines is set to join the Tigers in a huge swap deal which will see Tyrone Peachey return to the foot of the mountain.

The deal has reportedly been finalised and will be announced as soon as this week according to The Daily Telegraph.

Peachey and Staines will only have a singular year left on their respective contracts and will fight for an extension at their new clubs.

Staines, 22, has been a long-term target of the Tigers after he was edged out of Penrith’s starting side by young gun Taylan May.

Penrith bosses gave the Forbes native permission to speak with rival clubs in 2020, however he had been unable to secure a move to due his hefty $500,000 price tag.

Staines scored four tries on debut in 2020 and managed 38 appearances across three seasons, crossing in the Panthers’ grand final win over the Eels.

Under Tim Sheens, Staines is set to fight it out with Daine Laurie for the merger club’s No.1 jersey, while Peachey returns to the Panthers after a four-year absence.

The 31-year-old was so desperate to move back to Penrith he reportedly requested a special exemption to reduce his salary, with NRL rules stating players are unable to switch clubs for a lower figure during the length of their deal.

Peachey played 109 games for the Panthers between 2014 and 2018 and is set to add to that tally in 2023.

The Tigers are also reportedly interested in front rower Spencer Leniu who will reportedly see out the final year of his deal, while Christian Crichton has been informed he won’t be re-signed.
