A lot of interest': Burton set to be next $1m man as Dogs face battle to keep star

After securing his Origin and Kangaroos debut, the Bulldogs are going to have to up the ante to fend off rival clubs and retain their young star Matt Burton.

The 22-year-old is signed to the Bulldogs until the end of 2023. But come November 1 he will be free to negotiate with rivals for 2024 and beyond.

Burton’s manager told News Corp that the gun five-eighth is “happy” at the Bulldogs, but he also admitted there’s “a lot of interest” in him.

The Dubbo product will earn around $500,000 next season and the Dogs have already made moves to keep him on an upgraded deal — a reported four-year extension at $750,000 a season.

But the club is going to have to up that offer to the $1 million mark to compete with what rival clubs are set to offer, according to News Corp.

Burton’s agent David Riolo told News Corp that as soon his star client is back from the World Cup they will “sort” his future.

Riolo confirmed there’s interest from other clubs but stressed that Burton is “happy at the Dogs.”

“He likes the new coach and he gets on with everyone there, so there is no issue for him at Canterbury,” Riolo said.

“I don’t want to speculate.

“Look, I understand there is a lot of interest and we will work through that.

“Generally with a player of his calibre and someone on the salary he is going to command those deals are done in good time because clubs need to know budgets,” Riolo said.

“And if you have Matt Burton in your budget and you don’t get him, well, you have got a fair bit of money to spend, don’t you?

“So you can’t wait to the end of the year obviously because there won’t be any money left in people’s caps.

“There is no reason why the Dogs won’t have a good shot at him. But it’s just he’s got to work through the process.”

Burton made his international debut during Australia’s 84-0 thrashing over Scotland last Friday night (Saturday AEDT) and will now wait to see if he is retained in Meninga’s squad to take on Italy this Saturday (Sunday AEDT).
