Message to teammates revealed as Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson makes shock retirement call

Inspirational Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson has called time on his 11-year NRL career.

The Bulldogs released a statement on Thursday afternoon confirming the shock news citing to “focus on life after footy with his family” as the reason.

It comes as News Corp revealed the message Jackson sent to his teammates to inform them of his decision.

“Hi Boys, sorry I wasn’t able to do this in person,” the message read.

“I just wanted to let you know that I have made the decision to retire. It’s been great getting to know you and play alongside you over the last few years.

“I’ll still be floating around the club and I’m looking forward to next season.

“I wish you all the best.

“If there is anything I can do for you guys please reach out.

“Thanks Jacko.”

Bulldogs chairman John Khoury acknowledged that Jackson’s decision has “not been easy” and honoured his stellar career.

“Josh has long been at the heart of the Bulldogs,” he said.

“He has led this great Club with pride. He has bled blue and white, and played for his state and for his country.

“We know this decision has not been an easy one and while it is a sad day, there is no doubt that despite not lacing up the boots and running out in 2023, he will continue to inspire the Bulldogs team and our community for many more years to come.

“We cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for our Club, but now it is time to reflect on and celebrate his wonderful career.”

“Josh has always epitomised what this Club is about. He’s tough. He’s resilient. He leaves everything on the footy field,” 2022 interim coach Mick Potter added.

“He is and always will be, the epitome of a Bulldog.

“His efforts and professionalism are unparalleled, and it will be hard to fill that void in the team.

“Josh’s actions have always been about doing the best for the team and the Club, and that is what he has done”.

The workhorse forward, who had one year to go on his contract, has been the lifeblood of the club ever since he made his debut in 2012.

Jackson went on to play a total 241 NRL games for his beloved Bulldogs and was recognised for his efforts in 2015 and 2018 when he was named Dally M Second Rower of the Year.

Gulgong-born Jackson represented New South Wales nine times from 2015 to 2017 and Australia twice in 2014.

When he burst onto the scenes in 2012, the Bulldogs were in much happier times. He started in the second row in their grand final loss to the Storm that year and again in 2014 against the Rabbitohs.

He has stuck solid with the club through much tougher times — the axings of Des Hasler, Dean Pay and Trent Barrett as well as roster clean-outs and changes to administration.

Jackson will go down as one of the most respected players to ever pull on a Bulldogs jersey.
