Craig Young has stepped down from his role on the Dragons board following his decision to write a court reference for Brett Finch using the club’s letterhead.
Young, who was already scheduled to finish up as chairman as part of a “rotation cycle” unrelated to the incident, confirmed the news on Monday afternoon in a statement released by the club.
“I have this afternoon advised my colleagues of the Board of the St George Illawarra Dragons of my decision to stand down as a director of the club immediately,” he said.
“I believe it is in the best interests of the club – the interests I have always proudly sought to work for and positively represent.
“I believe this is the appropriate action, given my individual decision to provide a personal reference on official letterhead, for which I have already apologised.
“I regret my error in judgment to provide the reference on letterhead, at the request of legal representatives.
“I do not regret my decision to provide a character reference for a long-time family friend as to his character and behaviour, prior to a damaging addiction.”
Young submitted a glowing character reference for fallen NRL star Finch, who has pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service to make available child abuse material.
The reference was submitted with a Dragons letterhead in a move that angered the club.
“The St George Illawarra Dragons are aware of a letter from chairman Craig Young on club letterhead supporting Brett Finch in his ongoing court case,” a Dragons statement read.
“This statement was provided in a personal capacity and was not supported or approved by the club.”
Young later apologised for “any distress caused” as a result of his “error in judgment.”
The Dragons have confirmed that WIN CEO Andrew Lancaster will fill the role — something he was already scheduled to do next month.
