Its not on: Suaalii avoids ban but Dolphins star suspended for nasty hip-drop

Sydney Roosters young gun Joseph Suaalii has avoided a ban after being placed on report an “ugly” late shot on Saturday.

But the Dolphins have been hit with a suspension blow of their own with hooker Jeremy Marshall-King set to be sidelined for two weeks for a dangerous hip-drop tackle.

In the 34th minute of the Dolphins’ shock 20-14 win over the Raiders, the New Zealand international was the third man in on a tackle with Corey Horsburgh, slamming into the knees of the the Canberra gun.

“That doesn’t look good that replay,” Dan Ginnane said on Fox League, with the rake subsequently sin-binned.

He will take a two-week ban with an early guilty plea, but risks three weeks on the sidelines if he unsuccessfully challenges at the judiciary panel.

Meanwhile, Suaalii was cited in the 24th minute for his clash with New Zealand Warriors star Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad after the fullback drifted across field and offloaded the ball.

Nicoll-Klokstad, who was later taken from the field in the second half for a concussion assessment from a separate incident, was left lying on the Allianz Stadium turf after the Suaalii shot.

But Suaalii was handed just a grade one dangerous contact charge by the NRL judiciary, meaning he escapes with a $3000 fine - unless he opts to fight the charge at the judiciary and loses.

Tom Gilbert of the Dolphins was also fined for a grade one dangerous contact charge, as was Viliame Kikau of the Bulldogs for a trip on Will Warbrick.

“Making contact, oh well after he’s let go of the ball,” Fox League’s Greg Alexander said as Sualii flattened Nicoll-Klokstad.

“(He) jammed him under the rib in the back.”

NRL great Steve Roach warned late hits “hurt a lot more” given players are relaxed after an offload.

“They are the ugly ones … that whiplash,” commentator Matt Russell added.

“Your body is lax when the ball’s well gone.”

Alexander added: “It’s not on. You can’t hit a man once he’s let go of the ball and once he’s relaxed and Joseph Suaalii hit him under the ribs, under the back... We try and protect our playmakers from that from forwards when they drift across the field.

“Once they let go of the ball, you can’t hit them.

“Suaalii put a shot on well after he’d passed the ball.”

The Roosters are already missing a string of first grade stars in Victor Radley (head knock), Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (back), Matt Lodge (facial fracture), Angus Crichton (personal), Connor Watson (knee) and Sitili Tupouniua (knee).

Suaalii avoiding a suspension could prove crucial for Trent Robinson’s side heading into the Round 3 clash with South Sydney on Friday night.
