‘It serves nothing: NRL boss slams ‘unnecessary’ player boycott over pay war

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys has slammed the playing group’s boycott of the NRL’s mulitcultural round launch as details of the new CBA are yet to be agreed upon.

The NRL held their Harmony in League gala day on Tuesday at the Belmore Sports Ground, with Canterbury legends and several schools in attendance in the heavy rain.

Despite James Graham and Sonny Bill Williams’ attendance, current first grade players were a notable omission and V’landys said the stand against the NRL was “completely unnecessary”.

He also revealed that only finer details are holding up the new collective bargaining agreement from being finalised.

“We are all here to promote the game, we’re here to look after young kids,” V’landys said on the Today Show.

“There was a lot of young kids there yesterday, not having their role models and heroes there would have been a great disappointment.

“And what does it serve? It serves nothing, we’ve agreed on most of the major terms, it is only the detail now.

“So to take an action like that, it was completely unnecessary.”

The boycott is the latest stand in the players’ stoush with the NRL, with players refusing the attend multiple events run by the game’s governing body in recent weeks.

Playing groups first stood down from NRL media days, before taking to social media to highlight key issues in the ongoing negotiations.

According to the SMH, one of the biggest sticking points is potential changes to the current transfer system.

The NRL are hoping to prevent players from signing with rivals a year ahead when they will arrive at their new club.
