‘Just walk away: Klemmer reveals exactly what was said in heated Hastings exchange

Tigers enforcer David Klemmer has revealed exactly what he said to Jackson Hastings after the Knights halfback attempted to apologise to centre Tommy Talau.

Hastings caught the young outside back’s face during Sunday’s clash, breaking his nose as Talau failed his HIA.

The 27-year-old approached Talau after an interview with Fox League and was given a shove as Klemmer stepped in to defend his teammate.

Klemmer and Hastings were a part of a player swap in the off-season and the hulking prop made it clear he had no ill feelings towards the halfback prior to the game.

“I don’t know him from a bar of soap,” Klemmer said to the SMH.

“Do I just watch and let them go at it? Do I just watch them throw it down? That’s what everyone wants.

“They want to see that. What do you do? I wasn’t even upset, I just said, ‘That’s enough. You won the footy game, just walk away’.

“Obviously, it’s blown up and people have their own views.

“At the end of the day, he got the win, he should have just walked away when Tommy said he didn’t want to talk to him, just accepted it.

“Maybe I just should have let them have it. What do you do?”

Pundits have slammed Talau’s post-match actions, but Klemmer believes “there wasn’t really much in it” and conceded it was “a bad scene”.

The incident game after the Tigers’ loss to the Knights, going down to a side with 12 players for half the game and without gun playmaker Kalyn Ponga.

Tim Sheens side are now 0-2 to start the season, sitting in 17th place after Michael Maguire was sacked last season.

“I could see that Tommy didn’t want to talk about it and some argy-bargy happened. I went over and said, ‘Leave him alone, he doesn’t want to talk to you’,” Klemmer said.

“That was it. The next thing there was a security guard and everyone is jumping in. Then he started mouthing off. It wasn’t like it was a melee … Then the security guard came.”
