‘There has to be accountability: NRL responds after Souths caught playing with extra man

The NRL has promised there will be “accountability” after the Rabbitohs had 14 players on the field against the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night.

The Rabbitohs sent a big statement to the competition at Suncorp Stadium, winning 32-6 after brilliant displays by Latrell Mitchell and Campbell Graham.

In the process, however, the Rabbitohs had 14 players on the field for about 15 seconds, which they are now being investigated over.

The extra man was on the field for two to three plays with Souths in possession with the score 22-6 and Brisbane was down to 12 players at the time after Herbie Farnworth was sin-binned.

“It shouldn’t happen,” Abdo told The Continuous Call Team.

“We need to have controls in place to make sure that it doesn’t happen again and obviously there has to be accountability for that.

“There’s a full review well underway (and) we’ll look to finalise that on Monday.”

The breach is considered minor and the Rabbitohs are expected to be find instead of being docked competition points.

In the 53rd minute, the Rabbitohs made a double change with Davvy Moale and Jai Arrow coming on to replace Tevita Tatola and Thomas Burgess.

Footage shows that Arrow and Burgess were on the field at the same time with the latter taking a hit-up before quickly rushing from the field.

However, a report from Sydney Morning Herald states it was Moale who “jumped the gun” when it came to entering the field and not Arrow.

“I handed my card to old mate and he said, ‘Away you go,’ so I ran on to the field,” Arrow told the SMH.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the NRL will demand a full report from the ground manager and interchange official over how the bungle happened.
