AFLW set for fixture shake up following WA's Covid curveball

Changes to Western Australia’s border restrictions are set to alter the opening round of the AFLW fixture, that kicks off next Friday, January 7.

The WA government moved South Australia and Queensland to ‘extreme risk’ states from Friday, December 31 amid rising Covid-19 cases, prohibiting travel to Western Australia unless for special exceptions, thus affecting Fremantle’s clash against Adelaide and West Coast’s meeting with Brisbane.

“We will release an updated fixture once everything is locked in and look forward to our season getting underway next week.”

It comes as Gold Coast’s entire AFLW team went into quarantine on Wednesday as it awaits further results after a player tested positive to Covid, although Code Sports reported at the time the AFL was confident Round 1 would go ahead as scheduled.

Elsewhere, The Advertiser reported two members of Adelaide’s AFLW team tested positive in recent days.

Men’s teams have also been hit with Covid cases including one at Port Adelaide and Adelaide and at least 10 Sydney players.
