Hapless' West Coast smashed for ‘horror show' start as nightmare season worsens

West Coast have been slammed for their “horror show” start at Optus Stadium, as the Eagles managed just one goal to Richmond’s seven on Friday night.

For the fourth time in just seven games, the Eagles failed to reach double digits in the opening term.

Alarmingly, all the Tigers’ goals came from West Coast turnovers.

“The horror show that is the West Coast Eagles’ season continues,” Fox Footy’s Garry Lyon said.

“Seven goals to one quarter; absolutely smashed this hapless West Coast Eagles team.

“We asked this week: What have you got to find within yourself? Well, there was nothing.

“The turnovers were of an under 16s level – that’s how bad it was that first quarter.”

Lyon pleaded for West Coast to find some fight for the remainder of the contest.

“It’s seven goals to one – it could easily have been another couple,” he said.

“The challenge lays fairly at the feet of this West Coast Eales side to dig in – I don’t know if they are capable.

“They look like a dispirited bunch.”

The Tigers had been averaging just nine marks inside forward 50 per match in 2022 leading into Friday night’s contest.

Richmond took a whopping eight marks inside forward 50, against an Eagles side weakened by the late withdrawal of defender Tom Barrass.

“It’s the second most by any team for the quarter – it was a procession going in there,” Lyon lamented.

Richmond forward Tom Lynch was dominant with 2.3 from his four marks and seven disposals in the first term.

Fox Footy’s Nathan Buckley said it was time for Eagles players to step up.

“Richmond have been dominant from the get-go,” he said.

“When they’ve gone back, the Richmond forwards have been too good for the West Coast defenders. There’s been no pressure on the kicker.

“The make up of the team we know has been challenged… but there’s not enough buy-in collectively across the group – the senior players are probably thinking ‘Jeez I haven’t been in this position for five, six, seven years’ and the young blokes are just thinking, ‘how good is this?’.

By quarter time, the Eagles were staring down a 37-point deficit, with injury concerns over Jack Darling, Liam Ryan and Willie Rioli – but all three remain out on the field.

West Coast’s only goal came from a quick snap by rookie Luke Strnadica early in the first term.
