De Goey spotted at training after break; Lions reshuffle after brutal reality check: Team Tips

Collingwood could bring Jordan De Goey back for this week’s game against Gold Coast.

Plus Carlton is set to welcome back several big names after its spurring win over Fremantle.

AFL ROUND 15 FIXTURE AND TEAMS (All times AEST)

BRISBANE LIONS v WESTERN BULLDOGS

Thursday June 30, 7:20pm at Gabba

Lions’ team

B: J.Payne, H.Andrews, M.Adams

HB: B.Starcevich, D.Rich, N.Answerth

C: J.Berry, T.Berry, H.McCluggage

HF: C.Rayner, E.Hipwood, L.McCarthy

F: D.McStay, J.Daniher, C.Cameron

FOLL: O.McInerney, J.Lyons, L.Neale

I/C: D.Robertson, M.Robinson, K.Coleman, J.Tunstill

EMG: C.Ah Chee (sub), J.Madden, D.Fort, R.Lester

and the impending return of key players. Star Zac Bailey should return after missing the Dees game due to health and safety protocols, while coach Chris Fagan said Dayne Zorko was a “certainty” to play. James Tunstill and Tom Berry will likely make way for Zorko and Bailey, while this might be the week the Lions finally unleash Rhys Mathieson at AFL level after racking up 37, 49, 23 and 43 disposals from his past four VFL outings. Deven Robertson would likely make way is Mathieson came into the side. Luckily scans have cleared Jarryd Lyons of any structural damage to his ribs, so he should be fine to face the Dogs.

Bulldogs’ team

B: E.Richards, R.Gardner, T.O’Brien

HB: C.Daniel, A.Keath, B.Dale

C: B.Williams, J.Macrae, A.Scott

HF: J.Johannisen, J.Ugle-Hagan, T.Liberatore

F: M.Bontempelli, A.Naughton, C.Weightman

FOLL: J.Sweet, J.Dunkley, A.Treloar

I/C: R.West, H.Crozier, R.McComb, J.Schache

EMG: B.Khamis, D.Bedendo, L.McNeil (sub), R.Garcia

TEAM TIPS: Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge flagged on Friday night the club might keep Tim English on the sidelines for another week to give him extra time to recover from concussion. The Dogs will be without rebounding defender Ed Richards after he was ruled out with concussion during the win over Hawthorn. There are plenty of contenders to replace Richards after Footscray’s strong VFL win, with AFL emergencies Riley Garcia (21 disposals, three clearances) and Dom Bedendo (20 disposals, six marks, one goal) impressing. Toby McLean returned from an ACL rupture in the VFL to kick two goals from 18 disposals, while Lachie Hunter had 26 disposals and six clearances — but neither player will be rushed back into the senior side. Zaine Cordy, Buku Khamis and even father-son gun Sam Darcy all performed strongly too, meaning the Dogs had the option to bring in extra height to combat the Lions if they want.

CARLTON v ST KILDA

Friday July 1, 7:50pm at the Marvel Stadium

Blues’ team

B: A.Saad, Le.Young, B.Kemp

HB: N.Newman, L.Plowman, S.Docherty

C: J.Newnes, P.Cripps, M.Cottrell

HF: C.Durdin, C.Curnow, J.Motlop

F: J.Honey, H.McKay, Z.Fisher

FOLL: T.De Koning, S.Walsh, G.Hewett

I/C: J.Boyd, J.Silvagni, L.O’Brien, M.Kennedy

EMG: W.Setterfield (sub), M.Owies, L.Fogarty, L.Stocker

TEAM TIPS: Expect a few changes at the Blues. Matt Owies could come straight back in after being a late out last round due to calf tightness, while Adam Cerra (hamstring) and Jack Martin (calf) will also be in the mix. All three players will face fitness tests later in the week, with Cerra highly likely to come in. One forced withdrawal will be Jordan Boyd, who faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines after suffering an acute fracture in his foot. If Owies is fit to return, it’s hard to see him, Josh Honey, Corey Durdin and Jesse Motlop all playing in the same side. Motlop’s pressure was a feature against the Dockers, but Durdin has a few more runs on the board.

Saints’ team

B: C.Wilkie, D.Howard, J.Battle

HB: H.Clark, J.Sinclair, J.Webster

C: R.Byrnes, B.Crouch, J.Billings

HF: B.Long, T.Membrey, J.Gresham

F: D.Butler, M.King, Z.Jones

FOLL: R.Marshall, J.Steele, S.Ross

I/C: M.Windhager, B.Paton, N.Wanganeen-Milera, C.Sharman

EMG: D.Joyce (sub), J.Lienert, M.Wood, J.Higgins

TEAM TIPS: They made a statement last week dropping Jack Higgins, but after a performance against Sydney that was just as glaring as the previous week against Essendon, will the Saints make another big call at selection? Saints fans thought Dan Butler was lucky not to be dropped for the Swans. He kicked one goal from five touches against the Swans, but laid six tackles and was ranked fourth of all Saints for pressure acts. Would Ryan Byrnes, Cooper Sharman and Hunter Clark be in some trouble? As for who comes in, Brett Ratten indicated Bradley Hill, who was managed following personal leave during the week, along with veteran ruckman Paddy Ryder would likely be available for selection to face Carlton. Tom Highmore was awesome in the VFL with 33 disposals and 12 marks, so he could come in to bolster the Saints’ defensive group. But Jack Higgins mightn’t be a lock to come straight back in. He kicked one goal from 17 touches for Sandringham, but took a while to warm into the game. If Mitch Owens (concussion) can get through training this week, he’ll really push his case for selection.

ESSENDON v SYDNEY

Saturday July 2, 1:45pm at the MCG

Bombers’ team

B: J.Kelly, J.Laverde, J.Ridley

HB: M.Redman, D.Heppell, N.Hind

C: W.Snelling, Z.Merrett, S.Durham

HF: D.Shiel, K.Langford, M.D’Ambrosio

F: P.Wright, J.Stringer, H.Jones

FOLL: S.Draper, J.Caldwell, N.Martin

I/C: M.Guelfi, A.Perkins, B.Hobbs, N.Bryan

EMG: B.Ham (sub), B.Zerk-Thatcher, A.Waterman, T.Cutler

TEAM TIPS: Ben Rutten was confident Darcy Parish would be available to take on the Swans, but fellow midfielder Andy McGrath would be “touch and go” considering he’d only just reinjured is adductor. Nick Bryan might come back out of the team to make way for fellow ruck Andrew Phillips, who was managed last round. Alec Waterman kicked 3.1 in the VFL to push his case forward for a re-call.

Swans’ team

B: D.Rampe, T.McCartin, P.McCartin

HB: R.Fox, D.Stephens, J.Lloyd

C: O.Florent, L.Parker, N.Blakey

HF: W.Hayward, E.Gulden, S.Reid

F: I.Heeney, L.Franklin, T.Papley

FOLL: T.Hickey, C.Mills, C.Warner

I/C: R.Clarke, B.Campbell, L.McDonald, J.Rowbottom

EMG: H.McLean, W.Gould, S.Wicks, L.Taylor (sub)

TEAM TIPS: The Swans face a selection squeeze, particularly in the big man department. Swans coach John Longmire said Peter Ladhams would be available for selection and will, subsequently, consider playing Ladhams and fellow ruck Tom Hickey in the same side, provided Hickey pulls up well from Saturday’s win over the Saints. But the Swans will also consider Joel Amartey, who kicked 5.2 from 23 disposals in the VFL on the weekend. He’s now kicked 26.14 from eight VFL games this season, including 10 majors from his past two matches. But surely not all of Amartey, Lance Franklin, Sam Reid and Logan McDonald can play in the same side? Neither Reid nor McDonald have kicked a goal from their past two AFL games. James Bell, Matthew Roberts, Sam Wicks, Corey Warner and Ben Ronke are all knocking on the selection door too.

ADELAIDE v MELBOURNE

Saturday July 2, 4:05pm at Adelaide Oval

Crows’ team

B: T.Doedee, J.Butts, P.Parnell

HB: B.Smith, N.Murray, W.Hamill

C: J.Hately, R.Laird, J.Dawson

HF: N.McHenry, D.Fogarty, J.Soligo

F: S.McAdam, T.Walker, J.Rowe

FOLL: R.O’Brien, B.Keays, S.Berry

I/C: H.Schoenberg, J.Rachele, M.Hinge, W.Milera

EMG: M.Crouch, L.Murphy, C.Jones (sub), E.Himmelberg

TEAM TIPS: The Crows will have to find a replacement for Will Hamill, who was subbed out of Sunday’s game under concussion protocols. They could too have to replace Shane McAdam, who suffered a nasty ankle injury. Matt Crouch surely has to come into contention after racking up 41 disposals and booting a goal in the SANFL, while Andrew McPherson (30 touches, eight marks) and Lachlan Sholl (31 disposals, nine marks) have also firmly put themselves in the mix. Riley Thilthorpe also isn’t far off returning from an ankle injury.

Demons’ team

B: J.Harmes, H.Petty, S.May

HB: J.Jordon, J.Lever, C.Salem

C: A.Brayshaw, C.Petracca, E.Langdon

HF: B.Brown, B.Fritsch, T.Sparrow

F: A.Neal-Bullen, S.Weideman, C.Spargo

FOLL: L.Jackson, C.Oliver, J.Viney

I/C: T.Bedford, M.Hibberd, J.Bowey, K.Pickett

EMG: A.Tomlinson, L.Dunstan, M.Brown, J.Hunt (sub)

TEAM TIPS: The Dees won’t feel inclined to make many changes after bouncing back in a big way in last Thursday night’s 64-point belting to Brisbane. They importantly got through the game unscathed other than Christian Salem looking proppy at stages as he builds back up to full fitness from his knee injury. Max Gawn said post-match he was pushing for a return as soon as this week from his syndesmosis injury, but you can’t imagine the club will be rushing back its skipper. Mitch Brown erupted with 6.6 in the VFL, while Jake Melksham (18 touches, two goals) and Kyle Chandler (14 touches, two goals) also played well. But it would came to no great shock if the Dees go into Saturday’s clash unchanged.

GEELONG v NORTH MELBOURNE

Saturday July 2, 7:25pm at GMHBA Stadium

Cats’ team

B: T.Stewart, S.De Koning, T.Atkins

HB: J.Bews, M.Blicavs, J.Kolodjashnij

C: M.Duncan, C.Guthrie, I.Smith

HF: Z.Tuohy, J.Cameron, G.Miers

F: B.Close, T.Hawkins, T.Stengle

FOLL: R.Stanley, J.Selwood, M.Holmes

I/C: J.Henry, M.O’Connor, S.Menegola, Z.Guthrie

EMG: C.Stephens (sub), G.Rohan, L.Dahlhaus, S.Neale

TEAM TIPS: Tom Stewart will come out of the side through suspension for his hit on Dion Prestia, with Gary Rohan, who was a late out due to hamstring tightness, likely to slot straight back in. All indications were that Patrick Dangerfield was set to return from injury against Richmond, but now Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary reports he’s likely to miss again against North given the Cats face Melbourne five days later. Cooper Stephens (28 disposals) and Shaun Higgins (21 touches) also put their hand up for a reprieve, but there’s not many openings in a Cats side that’s just stormed into the top four. Could they maintain their mantra of keeping their squad fresh and to rest one or two veterans against the 18th-placed Roos?

Kangaroos’ team

B: L.McDonald, A.Corr, J.Walker

HB: J.Archer, B.McKay, K.Turner

C: A.Hall, L.Davies-Uniacke, H.Greenwood

HF: T.Thomas, N.Larkey, P.Curtis

F: C.Zurhaar, T.Xerri, C.Taylor

FOLL: T.Goldstein, J.Simpkin, J.Anderson

I/C: J.Stephenson, B.Scott, A.Bonar, T.Powell

EMG: F.Perez (sub), K.Hayden, C.Lazzaro, C.Coleman-Jones

TEAM TIPS: The Roos are reeling after yet another loss on the weekend as David Noble is again left to search for answers at the selection table. Bailey Scott was subbed out at halftime with a hip injury as the likely lone forced change from the 57-point defeat to Adelaide. Jack Mahony (21 touches, two goals) and Charlie Lazzaro (24 disposals, one goal) would be at the front of the queue to come in after strong VFL outings. Callum Coleman-Jones (25 disposals, 26 hit-outs, one goal) also impressed, but the Roos couldn’t possibly drop Todd Goldstein or Tristan Xerri, could they? Lachie Young is free to return from suspension and likely takes Aiden Bonar’s spot in defence.

GOLD COAST v COLLINGWOOD

Saturday July 2, 7:25pm at Metricon Stadium

Suns’ team

B: S.Lemmens, S.Collins, C.Graham

HB: O.Markov, C.Ballard, J.Farrar

C: D.Swallow, N.Anderson, B.Ellis

HF: B.Ainsworth, M.Chol, N.Holman

F: I.Rankine, L.Casboult, S.Flanders

FOLL: J.Witts, M.Rowell, T.Miller

I/C: M.Rosas, J.Bowes, C.Burgess, A.Davies

EMG: R.Atkins, S.Day, B.Fiorini (sub), E.Hollands

TEAM TIPS: The Suns suffered several injury concerns against Port including to Izak Rankine (shoulder), Nick Holman (wrist), Sean Lemmens (knock) and Alex Davies (knee). The club has confirmed Davies will spend a stint on the sidelines of at least three weeks. Jack Lukosius (knee) is set to play some level of football this week. Connor Budarick (hamstring) could be fit to reclaim his place in the side, while Rory Atkins (34 touches, 10 marks) put his hand up for reprieve after a strong VFL outing, albeit in a 76-point loss to Casey. A debut for Elijah Holllands mightn’t be far odd despite only picking up 12 disposals with one goal in the twos.

Magpies’ team

B: B.Maynard, D.Moore, I.Quaynor

HB: S.Pendlebury, J.Howe, I.Chugg

C: N.Murphy, J.Crisp, J.Daicos

HF: J.Elliott, B.Mihocek, B.McCreery

F: J.Ginnivan, D.Cameron, T.Adams

FOLL: M.Cox, P.Lipinski, N.Daicos

I/C: S.Sidebottom, J.Noble, O.Henry, W.Hoskin-Elliott

EMG: T.Brown, T.Ruscoe (sub), C.Poulter, A.Begg

TEAM TIPS: Jordan De Goey has returned to the club, now it’s a matter of whether he’ll return to the field, with the Pies side otherwise well settled after winning its fifth game in a row over GWS. If De Goey plays, Isaac Chugg is seemingly most at risk of coming out of the team after a quiet debut showing against the Giants. Elsewhere, Magpies coach Craig McRae confirmed last week mid-season draftee Josh Carmichael was in the mix to play his first game, and he continued his good form with 24 disposals and eight marks in the VFL on the weekend, while Finlay Macrae picked up 21 touches himself and booted a goal.

RICHMOND v WEST COAST

Sunday July 3, 2:10pm at the MCG

Tigers’ team

B: D.Grimes, R.Tarrant, N.Broad

HB: L.Baker, N.Vlastuin, D.Rioli

C: M.Pickett, J.Short, K.McIntosh

HF: M.Rioli, J.Clarke, S.Bolton

F: J.Riewoldt, D.Martin, T.Lynch

FOLL: T.Nankervis, D.Prestia, J.Ross

I/C: J.Gibcus, S.Edwards, J.Graham, H.Ralphsmith

EMG: B.Miller, I.Soldo (sub), T.Dow, J.Aarts

TEAM TIPS: The Tigers will need to replace concussed midfielder Dion Prestia for the clash with West Coast. Jake Aarts was impressive in the VFL with 24 disposals and seven clearances after being named as an emergency for the clash with Geelong. Matt Parker is another option for the Tigers after a solid fortnight in the VFL. Trent Cotchin is listed as a fitness test after his collarbone injury suffered in Round 14, but he appears unlikely to play against West Coast.

Eagles’ team

B: S.Hurn, T.Barrass, L.Duggan

HB: J.Jones, J.Rotham, E.Yeo

C: C.West, T.Kelly, J.Redden

HF: J.Cripps, J.Darling, W.Rioli

F: L.Ryan, J.Kennedy, J.Waterman

FOLL: B.Williams, L.Shuey, A.Gaff

I/C: B.Hough, J.Petruccelle, R.Bazzo, C.Jamieson

EMG: A.Witherden (sub), L.Foley, G.Clark, H.Edwards

TEAM TIPS: Big Nic Naitanui is set to return for his first match since the Round 4 win over Collingwood. The ruckman has been sidelined with a medial ligament issue but made an impressive return through the WAFL. Naitanui finished with 17 disposals, 26 hit-outs and two goals to prove himself fit. A host of other Eagles impressed in that same WAFL match with Harry Edwards (30 disposals and 23 marks) pushing for a recall given the continued absence of Jeremy McGovern. Greg Clark, Luke Foley and Patrick Naish were also prominent at WAFL level as was Alex Witherden.

GWS GIANTS v HAWTHORN

Sunday July 3, 3:20pm at GIANTS Stadium

Giants’ team

B: C.Idun, S.Taylor, I.Cumming

HB: A.Kennedy, N.Haynes, L.Ash

C: L.Whitfield, T.Green, C.Ward

HF: S.Coniglio, H.Himmelberg, J.Riccardi

F: D.Lloyd, J.Hogan, T.Greene

FOLL: L.Keeffe, J.Kelly, X.O’Halloran

I/C: J.Wehr, T.Bruhn, P.Davis, T.Taranto

EMG: J.Brander, W.Derksen, K.Briggs, C.Brown (sub)

TEAM TIPS: Big Braydon Preuss is ready to return after his third suspension of the year. The Giants had the bye in the VFL, so players like Jarrod Brander weren’t able to put their best foot forward. Brander had been impressive a week earlier with 36 disposals on a wing. Mid-season recruit Wade Derksen could come into contention for his first game as a Giant.

Hawks’ team

B: B.Hardwick, J.Sicily, J.Blanck

HB: C.Jiath, J.Impey, H.Morrison

C: C.Nash, T.Mitchell, L.Bramble

HF: L.Shiels, L.Breust, D.Moore

F: J.Koschitzke, M.Lewis, C.Macdonald

FOLL: N.Reeves, J.Newcombe, J.O’Meara

I/C: J.Worpel, D.Howe, J.Scrimshaw, S.Butler

EMG: J.Morris (sub), F.Maginness, D.Grainger-Barras, J.Callow

TEAM TIPS: Jack Gunston will face a fitness test before he can face GWS in Round 16. Ned Long and Max Lynch are also pushing for a senior return. Finn Maginness was impressive in the VFL with 24 disposals, seven tackles and five clearances. Tom Phillips remains in the VFL while Kyle Hartigan collected 10 touches after being dropped for the loss to the Western Bulldogs. Young Denver Grainger-Barras is also waiting in the VFL wings for a shot at a senior recall.

FREMANTLE v PORT ADELAIDE

Sunday July 3, 3:20pm at Optus Stadium

Dockers’ team

B: B.Walker, A.Pearce, H.Young

HB: B.Cox, L.Ryan, E.Hughes

C: J.Aish, A.Brayshaw, J.Clark

HF: L.Henry, L.Schultz, T.Colyer

F: N.Fyfe, R.Lobb, G.Logue

FOLL: S.Darcy, W.Brodie, C.Serong

I/C: M.Taberner, D.Mundy, M.Frederick, B.Banfield

EMG: M.Crowden (sub), D.Tucker, S.Sturt, L.Meek

TEAM TIPS: The Dockers have plenty of options if they want to make changes to the side beaten by Carlton. Joel Hamling continues to impress at WAFL level in defence while young Neil Erasmus is another pushing for a senior recall. Darcy Tucker can’t be considered due to a finger injury sustained in the WAFL. Michael Walters and Josh Treacy could both come into the mix, and just need to prove themselves fully fit for selection.

Power’s team

B: R.Burton, T.Jonas, T.McKenzie

HB: R.Bonner, A.Aliir, D.Houston

C: K.Amon, W.Drew, K.Farrell

HF: J.Mead, T.Marshall, C.Rozee

F: M.Georgiades, C.Dixon, S.Powell-Pepper

FOLL: J.Finlayson, O.Wines, T.Boak

I/C: L.Jones, X.Duursma, M.Frederick, S.Motlop

EMG: S.Mayes (sub), J.Burgoyne, T.Schofield, M.Bergman

TEAM TIPS: The Power will need to replace Riley Bonner who will miss through facial fractures. But there’s good news with defensive duo Tom Clurey and Darcy Byrne-Jones ready to exit the AFL’s health and safety protocols. Orazio Fantasia remains a chance to play his first AFL game of the year after getting through the SANFL. He collected 17 disposals but struggled with accuracy to finish with 0.4. Ruckman Sam Hayes didn’t impress as he pushes for a recall, with just six touches.
