Local footy chaos as two EDFL teams booted from finals after prelim halted due to safety concerns

Two teams have been kicked out of the finals of a Melbourne suburban footy league, with the semi-final losers advancing to the Grand Final, after a game was called off due to safety concerns.

The Essendon District Football League (EDFL) confirmed on Monday night Oak Park and Westmeadows had been disqualified from the finals series.

The teams had been competing in the Women’s Premier Division preliminary final at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve when the match was called off following an altercation.

The league board met on Monday and determined both teams would be booted, allowing Aberfeldie - who finished fourth, then lost the first semi-final against third-placed Westmeadows - to advance into the Grand Final against top side Keilor.

“Following a meeting of the EDFL Board, it has been determined that both the Oak Park and Westmeadows Football Clubs have been disqualified for the remainder of the 2022 Premier Division Women’s season,” the league said.

“As a result of this decision, Aberfeldie will now play Keilor this Saturday in the Women’s Premier Division Grand Final, as the highest placed team to qualify for finals.

“It was determined that the conduct displayed in last Saturday’s Preliminary Final had brought the game into disrepute and the behaviour from members of both clubs would not be tolerated at any level by the EDFL.

“The Women’s Premier Division Grand Final will be played at Windy Hill this Saturday August 20th with a scheduled start time of 2pm.”

Keilor beat Aberfeldie twice in the home and away season, by 43 and 44 points. Their only loss this year was to Westmeadows in Round 2.
