AFL great Wayne Carey has dropped his legal action against Perth’s Crown Casino over his eviction which saw him accused of possessing an illegal drug.

Carey was in Perth commentating on the finals when he was asked to leave the gaming floor after a packet of white powder fell onto a table.

The champion goalkicker claimed the bag contained a crushed-up anti-inflammatory known as Aleve which he used to manage pain from long-term neck and shoulder injuries.

Carey’s legal team was considering whether to pursue a claim of discrimination over the assumption the bag contained an illegal substance.

However on Wednesday one of his representatives confirmed to The Age: “Wayne is overseas at the moment. He’s enjoying being out of the media spotlight and wants to look forward, not behind, and so he has decided not to pursue this matter further.”

After the incident Carey was escorted from the casino and then his hotel room, with Crown policy permitting staff to eject someone they believed was engaging in inappropriate or illicit behaviour.

He received a two-year ban from Crown venues and stood down from his media commitments with Channel 7, Triple M and The Age.

Police did not pursue charges against Carey partially because they were not immediately notified of the incident.
