Royal Ascot not ruled out for Derby runner-up King Of Steel

Connections of this year’s Epsom Derby runner-up King Of Steel have not yet ruled out a possible tilt at next week’s Royal meeting.

The son of Wootton Bassett created a huge impression when winning on debut at Nottingham last season before finishing a well-beaten seventh when pitched into the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster just ten days later.

The AMO Racing-owned colt was moved to Roger Varian's during the winter and wasn't seen until making his three-year-old debut in this season's Derby.

Roger Varian's towering grey struck the front with two furlongs to go but was eventually reeled in by the Aidan O'Brien-trained Auguste Rodin.

King Of Steel holds entries in the Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris but AMO Racing's manager Tom Pennington was far from hasty to rule out a trip to Royal Ascot, where he also holds an entry in the King Edward VII Stakes.

Speaking with Nick Luck on his daily podcast Tom Pennington said: "Look he's still got those three entries. He's got Ascot, he's got the Irish Derby, he's got the Grand Prix de Paris and there's pros and cons to all three of those."

"France looks an obvious target because it's a win and you are into the Arc, and he's not got an entry in that. It's £120,000 to supplement."

"All I can say is, well all Roger has reported when I saw him last week is that he's come out of the race from the Derby bouncing. It can take horses you know three-year-olds, it can take them a week, ten days, or even longer to get over a race like that but he's actually come out of the race bouncing and looks fantastic."

"All options are on the table at the minute that's what I say at this stage."

King Of Steel, who was as big as 8/1 in places last night for the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot on Friday, now finds himself as short as 5/4 with some firms following continued overnight support.
